President of PGI:
"This summer when we go into Open Beta remember that is just the MVP or minimum viable product. Additions will continue to come so long as the product is doing well".

This summer is Open Beta = Open to public? Beta testers and Founders playing but also having additional stuff to purchase like the 10th, 11th mech etc? Great!

but

Just the Minimal Viable Product with additions later.

Minimal Viable Product sounds more like what we normally see for a Demo. So is there a plan to release a full product later - an official launch of the full game with lots of stuff initially and more introduced to purchase) or the MVP is the official launch with continued updates like a new Mech /month kind of deal?

I'd be great to have official dates matched with event/what we can expect on the website for all to see to help squash the speculation

TBA as far as I know. We know the Inception entry starts Aug 7, so an OB may not be too far behind that.

The other thing to keep in mind is that this also a F2P MMO style title like the new Tribes game, so new content will be coming down the pipe in regualr intervals.

As a F2P, they have the luxury of being able to roll out slowly, whereas a big publisher who wants to ask 60 bucks per copy has to have a polished game before they can put it on the shelves.

MVP probably means "most bugs smooshed, core gameplay and advancement systems work, we're not embarrassed to have people judge us on it."

What usually happens is that open beta is in essence the "release" of the game. In open beta, you can spend your cash on in game items etc, and there won't be a wipe when the game is "released" but open beta will probably only have a couple of maps, and a score of mechs, if that. As they said before, no community warfare or anything like that, just jump into your mechs and shoot the bad guys.

Yeah think of MVP as a "soft launch." Sure it's not glitzy or glamerous but we get to play. :)

With all the laser beams, ballistics fire, and missile explosions in game... I think we can say it will somewhat glitzy and glamerous just because of that fact alone don't you? :P

Founder's Early Access is still closed beta 2. Not anything close to the complete game.

http://mwomercs.com/...veloper-update/

Read it.

It's very common in the f2p market. Dota 2 went beta with 1 game mode and half the heroes. Over time they have added a lot more features and even 9 months later are still in beta.

"Free" 2 play market is a long term supported game. Meaning MWO could recieve support for 5 years from everyone at PGI. Where as a traditional model is based on immediate sales then maybe 1-2 patches before moving on. If you read the plans, they want the game in people's hands, testing, moving forward, instead of trying to ship the titanic all at once. It means they also have a lot more flexibility in adjusting things and reacting to demand.

This is entirely normal.

You are not getting 100% of the promised product until after beta. Founders Access is just closed beta 2 stage still. Again though the success of the founders and enthuisiasm is going to do a lot of good things for pirhanna in terms of finishing the game and community warfare features. If I was an invester or producer and saw the money come in, I would be getting very excited at the longterm prospects of MWO success.

The OP is focusing on the wrong word... He's hung up on minimum.

The truly important word is viable.

The minimum only tells us that the game will grow larger then it is at the minimum point.

The viable tells us that it is going to be a playable game right from the get go.

"Dota 2 went Beta with 1 game mode and 1/2 the heroes"

But did they charge for anything beyond at that time? Did they have a Founder's marketing campaign?

Sure, even a single level, single mech, single game mode at Beta is something and better than nothing (and free = great). But I imagine the majority of people will be expecting more considering the selling of Founder's packs with promise of hundreds of dollars of content. $120 is steep for a Demo sized game. It may take years for the avg person to feel they got there moneys worth

It's a free world, I get it. But so far me and most have imagined a much bigger product to look forward to.
Here's hoping the additional content rolls out in big chunks very quickly. Then i'll decide on whether to purchase -support $$$$

Doesn't anyone realize that they will risk people moving out (mass exodus) if they can't properly code what the have planned and let too many people in to burn off their attention span day in and day out. Most will think this game sucks and never come back, however it will be an unfair judgement as to the game being still unfinished. It will take moeny to grow the game. You farm crops to harvest them later... whats the point of planting all the seeds if you don't have the infrastructure to harvest em all? PGI seems to be taking the the smart route and planting a little bit at a time, and also improving the farm little by little, instead of risking wasting the whole bag without the full benefit.
