Seriously, machine guns are bad and you should feel bad. Being able to slowly destroy something in an exposed component while facehumping your target is nothing compared to being able to wubwubwub, vaporize it and move on.

MGs being buffed would probably fix this for the most part.

A little off topic but could it be that MGs are working better than they previously were?
I ask because I got steam rolled by an Ember (to my surprise) a couple nights ago and last night playing my Arrow I was knocking out components like crazy.

If MGs ever got fixed, the Ember would return to being a top FS9 option - and a top light overall.
PGI should boost MG base damage back to 0.1 per tick. Crit bonus chance should be doubled, and crit bonus damage should be bumped up by at least half of what it currently is. Have a go with those stats for a week, then tweak them as necessary. Range could be dropped somewhat if necessary.
Currently MGs are pretty much a waste of space. You need 4+ to get anything meaningful out of them, and even then they're worse than pretty much any other option. The only reason to take them is that you don't have any other options due to hardpoints and weight restrictions.

Its funny because before quirks the Ember was by a large margin considered the best Firestarter if not the best light in general.

Reverse the 20% damage nerf or the 15% crit nerf.

FupDup is correct, They cut down the crits and dmg on MG's....ever since they have been worthless and my Ember sits and collects dust.
