As mentioned deep elsewhere (by now) in these forums, a laser guided bolt of lightning was being researched.
A new article on the research can be found here:

Being a directed bolt of plasma, this is not too far from lore descriptions of PPC fire. While the development of MW:O is rather far along now I understand it would not be a thing to worry much about. Considering the amount of care to give top notch visual galore and lore feel to the game I would still like to see something similar in the way PPCs are represented in the game. I also still posit that there should be no knockback to the impacted target as well but that is my take on the balance.
Also in the news of late:
[apologies if this has been posted. Did not see mention in first five pages]
Japan to delve deeper into real world mechs.

While mostly a talking point for politicians, the thought that it would be at least partially considered by a government to research more is something I am sure more than a few people get a little giddy over.
Of course though there have already been, and are currently, projects by the United States into mechanized units for various roles.

While not always mech related, there are tons of declassified projects from eras past of all sorts of tech and sci-fi nature available to help pass the time until our dreams of 'mech blasting come true. I recommend this page for a good list of links to peruse and search for off the wall projects and research:

Armoured Suits, sorta like the Elementals seems to be a logical next step for the Army, US Army at least... there was something I was watching or reading where the US were messing around with Exoskeletons for the Army, so the Men & Women are able to carry more, heavyer weapons, move faster and travel further ect ect....
Just found what I was talking about, Exoskeletons: Wearable Robots http://www.gizmag.com/go/1604/
here is something else they are working on http://www.gizmag.com/go/3062/

As much as i LOVE Mecha, especially enjoy most of the older Gundam series. I'd be against the creation of it. Why not focus on getting us off this rock first? Space exploration would be a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

Because whats the point of going to space if the space colonies can't declare a war of independence with their mecha?

Funny how the most hyped technological advances are ones that can be used to kill people... is the global population crisis really that bad yet?
