Killing blows are not that important anyway (outside of challenges). I rather have a Stalker on my team that does 500 damage and makes no kills than a stalker with 100 damage and 3 kills.

You deal the damage, if someone else finishes the job, excellent team work, move on to the next target!

very nicely put! :)

Full disclosure: this is my team

See this is a good example. I bet it felt great to do, and was hilarious, and everyone involved has fond memories of that time they wiped a whole team with gimmick weapons and didn't get scratched. I have no intention of bullying your group over this, it's a fun gimmick vid in a pick up game and it's good to see people having a good time. And you obviously recognize the flaws. But for new players, I want to make it clear that ultimately this victory was dependent on the enemy playing like morons. I saw some firestarters get shot in this video: what would have happened if they had charged the guy doing the recording? all he had was LRMs. he would have got smoked. it would have been humiliating.

what if the enemy had decent ECM and the brains to stay under it? Welp that game immediately goes from being 'glorious' to a complete disaster. any mech with arms (by the way dont armlock, newbies) can shoot down UAVs, having a TAG lock means that the guy shooting the tag is ripe to get shot right back, and when you're narced you hide for a couple of seconds, laughing at the missiles hitting a mountain, then get back to eating LRM mechs for breakfast.

a competent sniper team or a bunch of meta firestarter As or, well, pretty much anything but a bad team like the opponents in this video would have chewed up your group.

When I say stuff like this i often see people say 'but I put other weapons on my mech, that aren't LRMs! so the uselessness of LRMs is not an issue!' but this is foolishness. sure, put your 4 mplas on your lrm boat. you might be able to get lucky and leg a firestarter once in a while. But the weight you waste on missiles and launchers could be more armor, better engines, more lasers, or more heat sinks. Your LRMs might as well be made of lead for all the good they are doing you. It's pure opportunity cost.

looking closer at the video, I'm seeing really low numbers at the end, too. one guy cracked 500, two got close, the rest are <400 damage. That's not good value for weight. Warhawks, actual Warhawks, played as well as could be expected and pulling sub-400 damage! That's too low! Again, this doesn't even reflect on the team's skill: people were calling targets, scouting, communicating well, and the other team got wrecked. It's purely a question of the weapons they used, which are bad weapons.

You're missing the point of the video. That was a comp drop. Map was known and ECM and ballistics were outlawed (MCW planetary restrictions). It was the perfect storm for LRMs. And that's what it takes. Lights were no threat, either, though trade secrets as to why. ;) Suffice to say, that was the perfect situation, thoroughly practiced and it was still somewhat dependent on surprise.

Because they're not really effective by any definition that means anything.

Sorry, Shar. What you should be hearing is "some things work playing PUGs in mid-Elo but are ultimately a dead end if you want to get better." I'm sorry it's unkind, but it is true.

Totally right

LRM teach nothing about
  • Positioning
  • Teamwork (as you ARE going to need support)
  • Actual use of the R button
Or anything else.

LRM are of absolutely no use to ANYONE.

Good to know

No one doubts that you like your own posts

As you said

Why else would you post them?

Does not change it from trollish behavior though

Edit:
The fact that you unliked your other posts is telling though

Aside from that, LRMs being a highly situational weapon, being able to create and abuse those situations can go a long way. Also, I've noticed a certain "spanish inquisition" aspect to them in CW drops. Everyone and their dog has declared them to be bad and few take proper precautions against them. Clanners unfortunately get an edge in that department thanks to the overpresence of ECM in almost every weight class, but when doing PUG drops and not giving a ****, I've got a few great perfomances out of my Stalker 3H and Catapult C4.

Dont know if anyone mentioned it:

Set your cursor speed and acceleration to zero.

Aim for components that are cored, and likely ammo stashes.

Concentrate fire with allies.

You arent a Direwhale with a 70+ apha, but Stalkers are no slouch. Use the 6 LL build and stay with the murderball.

Stalker N is brutal and delivers.

One of CK's best players actively wants the 6LL STK-4N vs. any other assignment in comp drops (and he's an amazing DWF pilot). It's more than "no slouch." It's amazing in skilled hands.

Im a light pilot gone assault. Learning Fat Mech Fu...kinda hard not being able to move at will but the alphas are nice.

Im focusing on DWF and STKs now. Meta, but im restricted time-wise.

Does your friend have any vids of his piloting? Would love to cherry pick some ideas/skills.

He's talking about getting a recording rig, but hasn't yet.

I'm also an originally/primarily light pilot (but I drive everything). The others I'd recommend are the BNC and KGC. Personally, the DWF is the one mech I just can't get the hang of (been a Stalker fan forever).
