So far I have found that I prefer the mobility of mediums and the toughness and decent mobility of the Thunderbolt as my IS heavy of choice. I have not been able to find an assault I like. Most seem very ponderous and vulnerable to a mech with any agility whatsoever.
I was considering going with a Crab, Battlemaster or maybe a Banshee but would appreciate any advice. I do not need a superfast mech, but do not want to feel like a beached whale either. Prefer to run standard engines to improve durability unless the side torso hitboxes are super small.
Thanks!

Depending on the build/engine you can go up to 80 Kph on the Battlemaster. It is one of my favorites because of it's agility.
A tweaked Banshee can take you up to 60 something with lots of firepower and really nice hitboxes.

I've stared running a Battlemaster 3S, with just the 6xMPL and a standard 375, she runs like the wind, and confuses people when they go to pop an ST and it doesn't die...

So far made my way through to mastery on Awesome, Warhawk, Atlas. Each one has greatly changed with high end Skills.
Each one started horrible but as I worked with them they got much better quirks helped too.
Think real key to Assaults is simply learning how to torso twist to soak up damage and spread it out. Once you click on how to do it with specific mech it becomes a monster. Until them size of Assault means easy to hit and people will core you fast its real annoying.
I would suggest look over the Assaults on SMURFY and check out there quirks find the one that fits what you looking for. I would suggest Atlas D - AC20, 4 MPL, SRM4/6 and for little long range early battle harrasing LRM10 once I had it skilled up it was a nasty beasty.

MechLord, we've had a lively discussion on this exact topic here with input from Banshee, Atlas, Battlemaster, and other pilots
http://mwomercs.com/...e-or-king-crab/
The consensus is that if you want the mobility of a heavy/medium with a LOT of armor and weapons the Banshee 3M and 3E are the best choices with the Battlemaster as a 2nd. If you want a slow lumbering beast of a gunship then the King Crab or Atlas.
With 350-400 sized engines they are extremely fast and nimble and surprisingly survivable due to their torso hardpoints and huge shield arms. However until you have them Elited they are not going to play great.
Wubshee BNC-3M
380XL 4x LPL, 4x MPL
Great quirks, get the LPL and MPL Cooldown 5 Modules
DAKKA BNC-3E
STD350, 3x AC5, 3x MLs This makes best use of the quirks AC/5 Cooldown 7.5%, Ballistic Cooldown 7.5%, AC/5 Velocity 7.5%, Ballistic Velocity 7.5% plus I have the AC/5 Cooldown 5 Module for another 12%. Firing rate is FAST
Double Barrel Shotcannon BNC-3E
STD350, 2x LB 10-X AC, ERLL (ranged sniping), 3x ML, with the above quirks anc LBX Cooldown 5.
