I'm here to discuss the quality of VOIP, not the intelligence of the people speaking on it. Please keep any other posts on this topic and go flame elsewhere

1. The speaker icons on the scoreboard look bad. Like MS Paint bad. Very poor resolution
1a. It would be cool if they changed color when someone was talking in the lobby (this is minor)
2. The popup under the map of who is speaking is good placement, but again the visual is poor. Style just doesn't fit and it looks bad. (edit: I'm running at 1920x1080 with user config cl_FOV-79. Other resolutions have issues with overlap).
3. I can't tell if it is the codec used, or the quality of the microphones, but most players sound almost unintelligible. Like they're underwater, or like they swallowed their mic. Speaking with my unit on TS3 is significantly clearer than the ingame version.

Same, I imagine the low quality has a lot to do with few to no people using it

They went low quality for low network impact. It's somewhat intentional.

Understood, just providing feedback. They aimed too low, but keeping the server from getting overloaded is #1. Hopefully they dial up the throttle soon

Hey everybody, this feature seems interesting to me, but i'm not sure which is the best setup for voip. Is there a guide what all the settings mean?
Is there a visualisation which indicates that i activated caps lock respective the voice chat? I didn't see one.

The push to talk feels a little spotty, especially after I bound it elsewhere, but seems to work. It's true that the name pop-up is in a little awkward place pver the map. For me the voice quality seems good enough at least with most people. Of course I wouldn't mind it being better, but in my point of view it really doesn't have to.

A mic test would be nice.

@chemie and kissamies--are you guys running the standard FOV, or the user config FOV? I'm zoomed out at around a 0.70x and it doesn't interfere with the map. I guess that would matter.

Gonna stick with the OP's feedback on VOIP. I'm glad it's finally in... people just need to use it, and it might help if they Devs post a mini-tutorial for those who have issues setting up things like this. It's cool when you use TS/Mumble and it has a Wizard to help you get setup correctly.

MWO needs some adjustments to VOIP... I turned my delay off in-game as TS has no delay, and the folks on my TS server get an echo as it's still delayed in-game despite my adjustment of settings.

I experience the same suboptimal placement of the popup - right over the minimap.
I've already made this thread reporting it.

I'm using standard FOV (no user config in use), so that shouldn't be the cause.
My resolution is at 1280x1024. I think that could be more "the source" of the problem, or more precisely, the placement doesn't scale well with the different resolutions (or aspect ratios)

That would make sense that the TS3 client is using an overlay and doesn't care where it lands with respect to the cockpit. There would be a significant difference between myself running at 1920x1080 with a 0.70x zoom vs. you at 1280x1024 with a 1.0 zoom.

The good news is if it is a TS3 overlay issue, moving the box should be a very simple setting change. That is, if we had access to said settings...

personally, i'd think the box should appear under the text chat, as i never see it when its at the bottom of the screen really

I would think above it would work, like right below the Lance Pilot status box in the HUD

yea, basically anywhere over there, if its on/below the map, i'll never notice who it is talking, but i'm used to seeing things on the left hand side, text, lancemates etc..

  • 1: Agreed, valid, easy fix though, so not super important.
  • 1a.: Same thing.
  • 2: Same thing
  • 3: The codec probably could be improved, but it can be anything from the location of the player (Germany, Australia, etc.) to the player has a bad mic (laptop, eating, crappy dollar-store-mic, etc.)

to add to feed back, i would like some audible feedback when a mic is on and off, and the same for others speaking. like real radios. or ventrillo. short tone for mic on, short tone mic off. and a beep or something when some one else is done talking

optional obviously.

On more than one occasion I have heard the wrong language. Please check your settings and make sure VOIP is set to American since America is in charge of our internet that we let you use...

P.S. Nice to hear the ladies talking over VOIP.. Thursday is ladies night on MWO.

We need to add a dating app aspect to the game. You see in the immortal words of James Brown, "This is a mans world but it would be nothing without a woman or a gir(CENSORED BY THE GAMERGATE NSA)

I feel the quality is too low to be useful because I either have to strain to understand the person or can't understand them at all. Please bump the bit rate up.

This is 2015. There is no "server" - there are "servers". Server running the game is not the same one as the one serving voice.
The design decision was probably due to MWO still having 14.4 modem players.
