We all know the challenges can be fun, but the time dedicated to getting points and most importantly, player behavior can suffer drastically making the experience a real chore often at best.
I have an alternative idea I'd like to run past everyone. It is flawed, but I think it might be good enough to bring up and discuss.
Since PGI is working on AI bots for MWO, once they are done, could they be used for a better challenge experience? Example below...
Adder weekend challenge:
*Win 1 match with PGI Adder (bot) on enemy team, receive an Adder as "salvage"
* Win 2 matches with PGI Adder, receive X Color
* Win 3 matches with PGI Adder, receive X Camo
Odds of launching against a team with one slot occupied with a PGI Adder, 1 in 15 matches.
A grab bag element for weapons or equipment could be thrown in too in between the Adder bot matches with traditional match point system (but keep the rewards very small (like MLaser)).
Basically, it isn't about kills or assists as points, its about your team winning that match to get that mech. If the match is won, all players on your team get that Adder as reward.
I thought about just the person who gets the kill, but then you have an entire team chasing one mech like some bad Benny Hill episode.
The biggest benefit I could see to this, is it wouldn't result in people diving for kills. It also wouldn't necessarily result in super high meta/LRM builds since your chance in seeing the prize mech is less than 10%.
The biggest negative is you could play 45ish matches and lose the random Adder bot match 3 times :/. There could be a "we feel sorry for you" mechanic so if you earned 30 points, you still receive the Adder. Problem is, is that any different than just using points?
In anycase, it was an idea I wanted to share. Its a bit incomplete with some flaws, but I think it could be worth talking about.
