Ive been playing Tribes ascend and am most familiar with this particular f2p model. I am wondering whether or not the devs are going to implement a similar weapons/equipment scheme whereby there are 3,4 tiers per system whether it is equipment or weapons.
Iow, will there be achievements whereby you can fit 10% more ammo per ton? Increase ROF by 10% etc.
THe first aspect balance wise I was thinking of is
1. If there is a mechanic whereby ROF is increased as a perk, there should be a corresponding increase in heat output as a skill penalty for that increased dps the weapon brings to bear.
Secondly, if there is indeed going to be such a system where xp or cbills can mean mech x is going to be more powerful than mech y, there should be a corresponding sensor suite set of perks that can identify which mech has "modified" weapons systems.
This would place priority on new pilots to learn how to correctly scout and target the most dangerous enemies on the field and would be an imperative counter strategy if there indeed will be a tiered weapons tree.
Thoughts?,has this been addressed already?

The developers have said that this game will stick as closely as possible to the table top game, So I would probably say don't hold your breath. You get better by increasing your gunnery and piloting skills. I believe they also said there would be mech specialization too. Guess we'll see when they release the game.

Truly don't know the answer to this one. That being said I would say no to 10% more ammo as a mech has limited space and tonnage, so adding more goes against this principal. As to increased rates of fire who can say, but the history of the game weapon improvements didn't come in ROF but typically as improved damage or range.

Its my understanding that all weapons will be available no matter what is used to purchase them. That of course doesn't mean it might take longer to earn a weapon as opposed to buying one outright. So there shouldn't be any mechs out there with super weapons that your sensors would need to specificially point out for you.

Sorry I couldn't provided you with a more defining answer

I hear ya concerning cannon etc but I dont think what I described is beyond the realm of possibility or even necessarily a bad thing. I just am throwing it out there because IF there is going to be such a system , there needs to be a counter via sensors for balance, or as I said if rof can increase , heat should also increase.

TA rocks. :P

In the pilot trees you can get some small increases, but they're more like 2% up to 5 times for various skills.

[edit]

There's also stuff for maximising your use of the various 'Mech chasis.
