What if each CW battle consisted of 4 waves? You would choose which mech to play in each wave, and if you survive a wave, you could stay in the same mech for the next wave.
For example:
Wave 1: Skirmish/Assault/Conquest
Using the existing maps and game modes, play as normal. Defender of the planet could choose the mode, or it could be random.
Wave 2: Base Defense
The winning team from the first round can now attack the orbital cannon (or similar objective). The defenses would have to be re-worked to allow for a single 12 man team to have a legitimate shot at completing the objective.
Wave 3: Counter-Attack/Retreat
If the base is captured or destroyed in Wave 2, the other team has the chance to counter attack, the same as the counter attack mode we currently have in CW. If the base is successfully defended, the attackers from round 2 must retreat.
Wave 4: Retreat
Retreat mode would require a large map, where the retreating team must make it to a safe drop zone (coordinates known only to the retreating team) from scattered positions all over the map. Although the battle may be lost, additional honor/experience/C-bills can be acquired from successfully preserving as much of your team as possible.
This way, a battle seems more like a campaign, tactical choices on which mech to bring to each wave become more important, current maps can be used, and you can still bring a varied dropdeck without magically re-spawning during the middle of a battle (which kills the immersion for me).
Alternatively, it eliminates the ability to spawn camp.
I am sure this idea could be improved upon, and would like to know what others think.
