Since the CPU performance is pretty much impossible to pin down without reducing settings, the Titan X doesn't even matter. We'll need some game optimizations first.
Having said that, I almost talked myself into saving that $1000 up and selling my GTX 980. Almost. I'm good for now, but it's only a matter of time before I get that itch.

Hopefully a 980 Ti will come of this in a similar fashion to how the 780 Ti came about. Even if it ONLY has 6GB of VRAM, I'll probably upgrade as long as the price isn't obnoxious (relatively-speaking of course). Might even have to get 3 of them, assuming the Broadwell-E CPUs come out at the end of this year/beginning of next year.

I can run the game at 4k with only particle effects turned down (it gets in my way anyway) and get pretty much the same FPS I get at 1080p so it's definitely impossible atm without better optimization/multithreading. I run a i7 3930k@4.2 on water and a GTX970 and I still get really choppy FPS quite often at 1080p CW.

Given the issues I always have with heat, I'd hate to think about trying to SLI three Ti's.

Unfortunately a 980TI would be a hard proposition for Nvidia right now. Fitting a card bewteen the 980 and Titan X performance-wise is doable, just split the difference and toss in like 15-20% more performance, but that card would then compete with the 390X (which is basically a Titan X) for probably the same $700 price tag and I just don't see that happening. It would have to release at 980 pricing and bump the rest of the Maxwell lineup down.

My guess:
Titan X will launch first, at a ludicrous price.
980Ti will launch at $700, get quite close to titan X in games.
980 will come down in price a bit because it's no longer the fastest card.
Amd will probably offer better price/performance, but I doubt that'll stop nvidia cards from selling.

Titan X's $1000 price isn't even out of the realm of reason for a super high-end GPU. AMD just looks like they're trying really hard to 4870 the whole situation, and they might succeed because the 390X is so close to Titan X, they're within the margin of error of any method you'd use to estimate (it might even be faster, who knows), and even the liquid version is $300 cheaper. Air coolers should be cheaper still
I agree with your assessment, though. That's probably not too far from what'll end up happening.
