The warhorns sound like mini faction theme music, greeting card style.

What to do? Make proper music out of it and play it on the faction screen, depending who occupies the planet you are watching or in queue on. Make some warhorns like clan ones with real background not some random stuff...

I have to admit, my reaction to these warhorns was like: "what the actual ****?!?"
Instead, just use one or two instruments/voices for a single moody drawn out note or short melody.
FRR: a single long blow from a horn backed by a melancholic call from a nordic female choir, a sad echo of the snow covered nordic landscape and the despairing strength of a warrior culture in decline. https://soundcloud.c...k/wardruna-dagr
Kurita/Liao: I forget which is the japanese and chinese, but the obvious one for japanese is a short shamisen melody, as if played by a classic geisha, and for the japanese there is an incredible range of amazing material from Tuvan throat singing to the more classic string based ballads of central china.
And so on, it really shouldn't be hard. PGI dropped the ball on this one.
I think the best warhorn so far is clearly the IS comstar, that is the kind of moody feel I'm looking for but with traditional faction appropriate instruments.

Yeah the FRR one is pretty cool. I immediately thought it had a certain Hyborian sound to it.

Think elemental, as some other commenters have said and as the previous warhorns have been. Say, an actual warhorn recording for FRR. If you really want Chinese or Japanese instruments, don't try for so much structure, strip it down to one or two instruments and very few notes. These are supposed to be shouts, roars of triumph (I LOVE the Bearhorn, no surprise there). Maybe literal shouts. The sound of a sword being drawn for Davion.
I'm not saying music has to be right out, but I think it's risky. Using these, I'd feel like I've got Brave Sir Robin's minstrels tagging along behind me, celebrating my skill. They should indeed be killed and eaten...and I'm not just saying that because Ghost Bear.
