I've heard a lot of advice on mouse settings, some of it conflicting. I'm hoping to use this thread to get community feedback for new players like myself and sort out all my confusion

1) Terms. What do they really mean, what do they actually do, why should I care?
a) Sensitivity
b ) Smooth
c) Acceleration

2) the slider bar for each of these goes from 0 to 1 but there is no designation in between. Do you just kind of eyeball it? Or set them all to zero and fine-tune from your own control panel>mouse>properties?

3) high end gaming mouse (Razor, etc). Do its settings over-ride the game settings, or do the game settings trump your mouse settings?

4) What are your own current settings? What would you advise as a "template" setting for new players to at least get them in the ballpark so they can fine-tune from there?

Thanks. Its not necessary to respond to each of these, but any advice would be helpful.

I slide all my in-game stuff all the way to the left, and then tune using my Razer software.

One thing - as you play more, move your sensitivity lower and lower - it will help with your aim.

I have a fairly high sensitivity that I can scale up or down universally with a button on my mouse (R.A.T). My mouse also has a "sniper button" next to my 2 thumb buttons that drops the dpi drastically so I have the benefits of high sensitivity for piloting my lights and reaction shots and can instantly drop the dpi mid aim to snipe or precision off pieces of a larger mech.

Bottom line: A good gaming mouse is worth every penny.

I generally agree with this (and use incredibly sticky settings myself), but one of the best players I know uses an extremely loose mouse. If you have the coordination...deadly.

Sensitivity is the relative speed of your cursor (aim sights) to the amount you move your mouse. High sensitivity is good if you can control it, but if you find yourself chosing to snipe at long range, you might actually turn it down for better precision.

Smoothing is a computer program's attempt to judiciously ignore random jumps from your mouse input. In theory this would correct those slight jostling motions from clicking on buttons and start-stop moving the mouse. In practice, I seldom see a game that can do it properly, and HIGHLY recommend you turn it OFF.

Acceleration is a setting that determines how much time is allowed before the game temporarily increases the sensitivity. If you have low sensitivity, but a high mouse acceleration, you'll notice the following behavior: glide the mouse to your right, and your mech will slowly start turning right... then suddenly it turns right VERY QUICKLY.
Acceleration is another setting that attempts to be useful, trying to be both a super sensitive setting and a low sensitivity setting at the same time, but I never observe one that doesn't mess me up at the wrong time.
HIGHLY recomend you turn Acceleration to ZERO or OFF.
