I mean we all know how integral close combat was to especially IS pilots, so just make hatchets shoot other hatchets, it's obviously the best solution.

By which you mean "fire an invisible projectile with a 20m range and wide angle of hit detection when I swing" right?

They can just make 1-2 swing animations and give it a fixed range of hitting stuff in front of it like a flamer. It might look lame seeing the same swing over and over again though. I recommend giving it a cooldown so it doesn't look silly. Just say swinging it more often strains the arm too much.

I don't even mind making it a higher damage move on a long cooldown to make it more special and maybe it disables firing regular weapons until the animation is done if that gets too complicated.

Edit:

Moving just the arm will make it look very lame to be honest. Without the full motion of the body to give impact to the swing it might just be a boring addition. Since this animation part is a bit heavy keeping it only to mechs with actual hatches should reduce the cost of production, though I would love to have my Atlas throwing straights and haymakers on the enemy.

Some nice melee animations would be amazing...prob not going to see that though. I'd settle for rudimentary ones, so long as it added to the gameplay itself.

Borderlands 2 tiny tina's assault on dragon keep dlc. One of the side missions rewards you with a torgue shotgun that fires swords that explode! It's a swordsplosion!!!! hehe

Oh darn need to kill more dwarves.

Well there was a Mod to get physical combat in the original OFP later renamed ARMA Cold War.
Also the abillity to drag items /bodys but while the engine was not supposed to do such stuff - but you could add a editor to make some not so Bad moves - didn't looked good but worked

They removed IK and fuqqed up the walking animations over 2 years ago and haven't fixed them. If they can't get walking down right, what makes you guys think they'd ever get close to animating melee attacks..

Yeah we've suggested the "invisible 10-20m range projectile" standin for melee a ton of times.

Thats the super simple hack way to do it, but its not really satisfying. It would work, but be kind of lame.

But how does this help my Atlas to pick up enemy Blackjacks and rip them apart in mid-air, then throw their smoking corpse at the rest of my enemies as a warning?

you know... Mechwarrior 4 Mercs free release had battle armor claws, that fired a small projectile that stopped dead around 5 or so meter's infront of the battle armor.

No one ever complained about that for melee...
