I was just called out for being a noob because I had a ping of 32... In all the first person shooters I've ever played online, low ping is desirable. Now I am fairly new to the game so I thought to myself, I should ask around.

So is it best to have low ping or high ping in this game? What is the understood sweet spot?

I play on a top of the line gaming rig on max settings.

Are you sure it was because of your ping?

Low ping means low latency which is good for you but bad for other player, which might have a higher ping and therefore a longer delay. 30 is pretty damn good, we europeans can only dream of such pings. I have a ping of around 110-120 most of the time so you would have the advantage. In MWO, it's not as bad as in other shooter because you don't need twitch reflexes like in CoD oder Battlefield, where every split second matters.

I remember back, when I played Counter Strike, I had often a ping of 15-20 on many server in germany and many called me a cheater and prompt me to give my self an artificial high ping per console.

If they called you a noob based on your ping alone, then I'd say that someone was very jealous...

If somebody called you a noob because of ping in the past several hours, it's probably because their ping is 200+ and they have to master the art of slight lag shooting and leading targets because of latency, in addition to any projectile speed.

Put one 30-ping player in an entire match of Europeans with 200+ ping, and the 30 ping player is going to have an inherent advantage. They might call you "low skill low ping noob" and yes... it means nothing and they're just jealous. Have fun and go kick their arses!

The only thing that was said to me. "Low ping = Low skill. Noob"
I was the last one alive playing conquest with my Firestarter.
I'm not the best, but PUG players make me look good.

Yup, that's been my favorite game since June 1999. When Counter Strike Global Offensive came out I played that up until a couple months ago when my friend introduced me to this game. The one game that never gets old to me.

Low ping is an advantage of course.
Its just someone having a cry and trying to insult you for beating them.

Reminds me of playing the original Gears of War which is peer-to-peer hosting.

6 Americans vs 6 Australians
Americans all have 30ms ping and Aussies are all floating around 250+ as an American is chosen as the host

Round 1, close game but americans win.
Round 2 "finding new host", chooses an Australian.
Americans all now have 150ms ping, Australians all sitting just below 100
Australian team dominated the American players, they didn't score a point
Round 3
"Player has disconnected" x6

Noob Americans aren't hardcore enough for our ping :)

People always need some reason why the guy who just wrecked them is actually just a noob. In your case I would have chosen "FS noob" though. You might also see quite some "lurm noobs" or "op clan noobs" around.

lurm noob is legit in 99% of all cases. The 1% is good players pretending to be lurm noobs.

while true, its still a lot difference in your maximum potential performance betwen having 40latency or 350. 350 is 50% of a Medium pulse laserbeam or even a LPL. So it can very heavily affect some vital things ingame. If you recognize you get hit by a LPL, you will mostlikely not even be able to prevent this, because when you initiate twisting your command reaches the server after your opponent is done beamaing. A Low ping therefore makes the difference between how good you can twist damage away or even dodge it. and how accurately you can hit sections wiht a beam weapon, because oyur opponent may not be able to spead as much damage anymore.

Actually, there's a little thing called HSR in this game. It takes what each person sees on the battlefield and tries to report it to the server for a happy medium. It means low pings aren't as dominant in this game as others. For instance, someone in my unit literally lives 10 minutes from the servers in Canada. His ping floats between 7 and 9.

In most games, that'd mean that he get to see the battlefield most clearly. Here, he still sees things the same on his end, but HSR does not. He flies across a clearing in a light 'mech and avoids all damage, yet something with 200 ping shoots at him a second later in real world time. HSR puts those two together and tries to play "fair" by it, and he ends up losing an arm when he's been standing in hard cover. He openly gripes about it.

is HSR still true? because if that is true, why do we even have to lead with lasers because full visible hits on our end do not register?

someone who has no understanding of how hsr and MWO systems work. Call it "haters gonna hate" and move on.

As for having such a low ping, be prepared for dmg to take a noticeable amount of time to register occasionally. Sometimes a mech will take several steps after the shot animation finishes before imploding

variable pings. causes the server to count mechs as somewhere they aren't. Technical explanation here. Old post but still very relevant, especially in cases of hit registration and target leading. Be aware that this issue can be caused by any link from your pc to the servers, and may well be out of everyone's control. Early on there was an issue with a link just outside of the server farms
