If you're very much looking at being a wolf, you might want to go to the Clan Wolf forums, and look at the various units there.

Otherwise, feel free to look around the Clan forums, or the Inner Sphere forums to decide on your unit.

Visit the Merc Corp section of the forums (under Community Warfare) and see who's active and recruiting. Not personally familiar with Clan units, so can't offer advice on specifics.
I can say that the DHB would be an excellent choice and while I hate to admit it, House Marik has lots of good folks. Clanners are just arrogant jerks as a rule.
*edit* Doh....sorry said Merc Corp out of habit. Red has it right.

You can check out the Star Wolves, we are a Clan Wolf Galaxy sized unit (268 members and counting), with all the usual Clan unit stuff (Teamspeak, Clan ranks, bloodnames, etc), but we exist as a casual unit, so there is no tryouts (no trials of position), or time commitments (not required to meet at certain times to scrim, etc). That said, we do have a Rank system in the unit, so the more active in the unit and better mechwarrior you become, the higher rank you will obtain.

There are alot of other Clan Wolf units as well, just go check out the Clan Wolf section of the forum

in MWO player created units can provide a group to play with, in ether the group queue or Community Warfare, most will offer a teamspeak (or other VOIP) server, training and the opportunity to make freinds, getting to know a few people and dropping with them frequently will help a lot because you will no someone is going to work with you, however as you will be on group matches the enemy will likely be more coordinated.
Battletech (what Mechwarrior is based on) has almost 30 years of history so some people have over that time grown quite attached to a specific faction so are only interested in being part of that faction, if you want to be part of a specific faction e.g. Clan Wolf or House Liao then look for that factions recruitment threads here:
http://mwomercs.com/...munity-warfare/
playing for multiple different factions has certain advantages, each faction has a rewards tree, as you progress up the tree you can get Mechbays, GXP, Cbills, titles, MC and there are more rewards to be implemented later. if you want to earn the rewards from multiple factions then chose Merc.
.
PGI has prevented us from creating units with names taken directly from Battletech lore(e.g. no-one can own the Grey Death Legion, a famous Battletech Merc Unit but someone could create the Grey Death 6th battalion because that never existed in Battletech lore).
The unit will take contracts, if the contract is with one of the Clans you can only use Clan Mechs in CW for the duration (non CW games are unaffected), if it is an Inner Sphere Faction you take out the contract with you will only be able to use IS Mechs.
units fall into 3 basic categorys, Clan Loyalist, IS Loyalist and Mercenary, if you join a Clan unit you will not be able to use IS Mechs in CW, join an Inner Sphere Unit and you will not be able to use Clan Mechs in CW, join a Merc unit and you will likely change between Clan and IS, co can use all Mechs in CW but not at the same time.
you currently have a contract with Clan Wolf, if you want to play a variety of factions then a Merc Corp would be best, to join a unit in-game (even a wolf unit) you have to leave that contract, you can wait for it to expire or you can buy out of the contract, as I understand it buying out can be quite expensive so it would be best to wait for it to expire unless you chose permanent, a unit should be happy to wait a few days for your contract to expire if you explain the issue. if you want to join Clan Wolf then the other posts are a good place to start.
I am with a Merc corp if you are interested take a look at my signature however I do strongly recommend visiting multiple units websites to find one that looks like a good fit for you before making any decisions.

For players looking for a unit there is the hiring hall. If you post there, you will be contacted by recruiters from units looking for pilots and the better your short profile in the thread, the higher are your chances to be recruited into a suitable unit.
The new player help forum is not intended for recruitment.

Any group you join must be holding planets, or they are not worth joining.
