I can't really understand people saying the AWS is the worst assault. It's added structure has really helped it survive from its large hit boxes, almost all of the models have great quirks and two of the variants aren't limited to the 300 sized engine. Some of the weapons are low mounted, but I have noticed that they stand their ground pretty well against some of the "better" assaults and heavies. The big thing I have found-They work better with large pulse lasers then ppcs or erppcs.

The 8R is arguably the best missile boat in the game, able to put 60 lrms downrange in one salvo and carry plenty of ammo. That, or boat just 4 Artsrm6s with a max engine, over 1k rounds and maybe some spls. Very short range, but extremely high heat efficiency, decent speed and shooting a 63 point alpha over and over and over again.

The 8T has a 30% general reduction in recharge rate to all energy weapons and 15% off of heat and duration as well as missile buffs. Running 4 large pulse lasers or ERLL on it is pretty nasty with a standard engine, going over 60kph.

The 8Q is great all around with energy weapons and exceptional when running 3-4 PPCs.

The 9M runs a big engine, has 3 center mounted hardpoints if the torsos go and has ERPPCs that can reach past 2100m and still do damage.

The PB kinda threw me for a loop until I put two LPLs on it. It gets a general 30% reduction to recharge and a 30% reduction to laser duration. It gets a 12.5% heat reduction and range bonus to energy. A 15% reduction in missile recharge is there too. With 2 LPLs, it can put out 22 damage(with just the LPLs), every 2.32 seconds(.07 seconds slower then a spl) in a period of .46 seconds(.04 seconds faster then a basic SPL beam) at the same range as an unquirked LL. With the large laser buffs, think a 9 damage LPL at a longer range(1125m max), its beam duration is reduced within .03 of the LPL(.67 to .70). Without srm6s, it makes up for an overall weak alpha, but with the ability to lay constant firepower down range in a very short period with no ghost heat. I almost gave up on it until I used those LPLs.

The 8V gets the range buffs to missiles and energy, but none of the heat quirks. It is generally effective with 3 artsrm6s, as they all come from the same torso point. Add a 300std and 4 mpls, and it is a decent brawler. This is my least played AWS, post 2nd pass, but it didn't disappoint me as much as I thought, without the heat generation quirks.

I think they call it the 9Q. No joke. Look it up on sarna. :P

The 9Q also had ECM, if memory serves...which is one of the reasons I asked for the AWS-9Q a long time ago; it is technically not produced for several more years, but this would be an excellent addition to the current Awesome lineup, IMHO.

^Throw in an AWS-9Ma (hero even if PGI wishes).

3 ER PPC, ECM, and potential to mount a 4th PPC/ER PPC due to small laser being moved to LA.

It is, without question, one of the worst Assaults out there. The 8Q/9M structure quirks did not save this mech from its inherent flaw of getting hit too easily from any distance. No amount of addition structure will aid this. It indeed has low mounted weapons, there is no "some" about it.

I believe the intent was speaking about the 8Q/9M since we were talking about boating (ER)PPCs

I was one of the first individuals championing the 8Q post its quirks. I adored how I could fire the PPCs. Alas, it did not make up for this mech's weaknesses and they became more and more apparent over time.

Still suffers from the above and doing 5pts of damage past 1094m for 11.25 heat isn't much to brag about, which, despite being shot at 1313 m/s, can still be easily dodged at that 2100m away,

Don't get me wrong, I DO like the Awesome 8Q/9M, but I will not put a pair of blinders on myself and ignore its issues. It was a great mech in TT, it looked fantastic on paper, but they designed it too oddly for MWO hence its problems. Until they fix this, or give it an absurd quirk for the (ER)PPC, it will not see that much play, definitely not competitive.
