Hey, can you check out the resolutions on the new Loyalty 'mechs? Wolverine especially seems VERY low-res.

After watching the Dev Vlog I still don't quite understand how they decide which Mechs get textures that are 1K, 2K, or a mix of both. Only that they won't do 2K across the board because they are trying to keep MWO's install size as low as possible. Is this a real concern to MWO players?

Currently MWO takes up about 8-9gigs of space right now. I've got a couple MMORPGs sitting on my computer I haven't play in years taking up 20+gig each. Just how much bigger would the install size get with the current set of Mechs all at 2K?

Do they expect a mass exodus if they ever reach a certain size or something?

If they normalized the base install of the game universally to 1k resolution, with the # of mechs currently in the game, the base file size would shrink to about 6.4gb on a total install.

If they Setup a full blown 2k pack, it would balloon the install to ~14.7gb. If we did 4k, I expect it would jump to ~34gb.


That said, with some testing I have done, using both my GTX-680 4gb (256bit) and Titan X 12gb (384bit) and using the following command in my user.cfg
r_TexAtlasSize=1024
to try to force the game to use the 1024 maps in all of the texture DDS files (The DDS can store multiple texture maps)

With 1024 maps, with all over settings maxed @ 1080P we can expect 1400-1900mb of Vram to be loaded.
With 2048 maps, we can expect @ 1080P to see ~ 3380-3920mb of Vram use-age

2048 maps would be the sweet spot for our high end users, while if we normalized to 1024 maps, we would A: shrink the file size for the lower end users, and maybe even result in a slight performance gain due to less less files to page through on the DDSs.

We already know that the cry engine has an easy to use mod support system. It should be easy to setup a secondary download system to get players a full range 2k pack.

Looks good, EVERY camo pattern on the Mauler looks good, I will over time, be BUYING all of them.

Ok, now here is the Black Knight, right after they said it doesnt need a 2048 RGB or DIF.

Nope, not buying it, and I havnt, but the Vindicator isnt a full loss, it has one 2k RGB camo, and that would be Hotrod, which I own.

RGB file for Black Knight Blood Pact slipped in as a 4k res, which is pointless because currently the game, as is will only use the 2nd mipmap which is 2048x2048.

Lets split the difference, and bring the Bloodpact .RGB for the blacknight down to 2k, and raise the base camo of the .DIF to 2k. Total filesize difference will be a net gain.

Because to my knowledge, all of the texture files are authored in 4k, then shrunk.

Do you guys think that 1K/2K/2K resolutions would be fine for lights and mediums and 2K/2K/2K for heavies and assaults?
I mean, it wouldn't be perfect, but it'd be an improvement over the current incomprehensible inconsistent mess.

Updated Base Camo list to show all current mechs.

Only two mechs have earned a "Great" status for textures, while classics are in Good, or OK range only.
