Finally have a computer capable of playing this and so I have had a go.
Now I've played Mechwarrior since Mechwarrior 2 (great game but MechWarrior 3 was the best lets not talk about 4).

firstly wow this has a steep learning curve. I am generally useless as I run into things and can't aim for toffee, but I guess that will come with time and practice. I remember this has always been the case with mechwarrior games, eventually I learn, but the gap has been too long for me to pick it up quickly.

Firstly I have to get some obvious stuff off my chest (all of which I am sure has been requested or pointed out before).

The training grounds and tutorials are bad.

The in game tutorial tells you really nothing other than the basic basics. really needs more, a lot more. Some tutorials on the UI, mech lab etc are needed. thankfully I found some youtube videos and as I already understood the basics of the mech lab I could figure it all out.

The training grounds is useful, but boring and could and should be better. Why is it not just a simulator? where you can taking in any mech with any load out? why is there not an option to simply have a moving enemy (that would help practice aiming in the actual game), or some simple AI that would shot at you.

Oh and could we have a camera that shows where we are going? i.e. at full torso twist shows what is in front of the legs.

anyway I am sure that has already been done to death elsewhere.

I was wondering what controllers people use?

It appears to me that the best controls are Keyboard and mouse, but I've tried a PS3 controller breifly and was wondering about joysticks (was always the most fun way to paly).

I currently use a G13 and mouse with 5 buttons.

What are the must you have commands at hand and what can be left to hunt for (as it were).

Most people use Keyboard and mouse, some apparently use mouse and throttle, and a few even use throttle and stick, although I have tried and despite HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) working great for the older Mechwarriors I cannot use it effectavely in this game.

I use a logitech g500, I have firegroups 1-4, DPI (sensitivity) adjustment and push to talk (for the units teamspeak) mapped to the mouse, I have also remapped many of the keyboard commands to put everything I use regularly in the left side of the keyboard, but that is all down to personal taste.

Ok! My friend and I came up with an awesome way of doing Joystick and Mouse.

I am right handed so my mouse is in the right hand for aiming (and fire groups 1-3) and the joystick is in left for driving.

It is a little odd to get used to off the bat but damn is it amazing.

Set on the joystick (both twisting and pulling left and right) to be for turning
Set on the joystick pushing forward and pulling back to be for throttle.
Set extra firegroups on the joystick if you have them.

Tada, you are now 100% more in control of your movement than everyone else using keyboard.

The aiming comes with time though... I recommend lbx/regual lasers till you get better at aiming.

Wow. I like you. A lot. Same opinions on the games.

Everyone knows. Even PGI admits it is just awful. (Some of them anyway).

I'd certainly enjoy those ideas. My favorite control is the advanced control of the arms but first you must disable Armlock.

Sadly no, it won't happen. I'd personally love to have this attached to a monitor in the cockpit that I could flick on and off whenever I want.

I use a throttle stick and 7 button mouse. Of them I only use 4 for combat, 1 for voice, and that's pretty much it.
The throttle stick has: Leg controls. Armlock toggle. Freelook button (so I can aim the arms independently to attack or suppress multiple enemies at once), Jumpjet, Power, Override.

The joystick which I don't actually use has night vision, thermal, zoom, and consumable keys attached to it. These are the ones I hunt for.

mechwarrior 3 was buggy as hell though, almost as bad as Daggerfall.

I was wondering do people use the number pad 10% increase in speed or do they use simple up down method like W and S etc.

Keyboard & Mouse here. I use Keyboard for Movement (A=Left, D=Right, W=Throttle Up, S=Throttle Back/Reverse) @ a Basic 3 Buttion Mouse to aim & Fire (LMB=Group 1, RMB= Group 2, MMB=Group 3)

As for the Old MW Games, From what I tried, MW4 Mercs was Good, if I knew where to get the older versions for Windows, For Free & Working with Windows 7 I'd get them & Try them(MW2 Mercs I'm mainly interested in for the older ones, Cause Sgt. Deadeye Unther).
