If I look at the results of the games played in the last challenges ( https://mwomercs.com/tournaments ) it seems that the matchmaker is not fair to me !

Especially when I see players like "Kai Allard Liao and Deirdre Lear" posting in the in-game text-chat that they have done the challenge for SEVERAL accounts while I am not able to get the raven for even a SINGLE account, that not only shows that I am a below average pilot ... IT ALSO SHOWS THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH the matchmaker !

Theoretically the MM should put weak players like me in the same game with other weak players and elite players in the same game with other elite playes, giving EVERYONE a FAIR CHANCE to compleate these challenges

What is your experience with the MM, especially during tournaments and challenges ?

MfG, MEX

No, in theory, the matchmaker attempts to put two roughly equivalent teams against each other. Not so much the individual.

These are the mechs I used during the challenge (starting without skill tree), and as you can see the MM Gods have been favoring me. Geting a kill during a win has been more challenging to me than winning itself. ;)

Carry harder. I know that's not what you want to hear, but it is what you have to do. The mechs I have positive W/L ratios in are the ones in which I also have good KDRs and avg dmg. It takes a lot of practice to be good enough with a mech to win consistently.

yeah but then you got these funny guys that drop with 2 accounts on both sides and rig the game
since there mates are in team A.
Or players with vastly superior ELO play with smurf accounts and with some of there friends.
Totally ***** up MM in my opinion.

The other things that MM ***** up is pitting Metabuild vs normal builds and un skilled mechs
obviously some side is screwed.

Thus the problem. MM will put a couple really good players with a bunch of new/average players, then throw that match up against a team of good players and according to the MM, that's an "even" match. When in fact its already lopsided because those two really good players are going to be stuck trying to herd cats while the team of good players will just roll through them like a knife through butter.

The "carry harder" holds no water. Simple reason, when you get tag teamed by multiple people in MWO, your not going to be able to get all of them unless they are already damaged, and they are not landing shots on you as much as you are on them.

If you are getting tag teamed by multiple enemies before you kill one or two you have made a mistake and thus are not carrying hard enough.

I've whined about the matchmaker many times, so here we go, I'll have a go at it again.

Disclaimer: I love and enjoy this game, I play it a lot and my criticism is not mindless QQ, I just really think it could be made to be better.

According to various sources coming from PGI and restated time and time again, this is what I understand:
  • Your own Elo rating is combined with your team to formulate a sum or average. It is assumed that the enemy team has roughly the equivalent same sum or average Elo when compared to yours.
  • Only wins and losses affect Elo.
  • One team will always have a slightly higher Elo compared to the other and is thus predicted to win.
  • If the team predicted to win actually wins, nothing happens and nobody's Elo changes.
  • If the team predicted to lose manages to win, every member of that team gains some Elo, while the team that was supposed to win but actually lost will lose some Elo.

What are my specific personal experiences with matchmaker?

It's a joke, or it doesn't exist. I say this very harshly because I know it's a system that PGI has put a lot of effort into and some really brilliant folk have worked on it and PGI continually insists that it's doing its job very well. They can actually watch the matches in progress and it'll show them the Elo of individual players on each team, as well as the combined Elo of both teams, and they are seeing numbers that are very close to the ideal - very evenly matched teams comprising of players all in a very close Elo band. Yes, I'm insulting all of that because I honestly don't believe the metrics are reflecting the gameplay experience.

Time and time again I get put in a team and "oh, hey look, it's ZuFFuLuZ, or rageagainstthedyingofthelight, or The Flying Gecko... Mister D... Marc von der Heide... Tahribator... Aliisa White..." all people who I know are either members of competitive teams or have made it onto leaderboard events, sometimes multiple times. People I see a lot, who have been playing the game for well over a year, and are well invested. Then six minutes later I die for whatever reason and I get to spectate somebody on the team, and WOW are they new. Sometimes they're even in a trial mech, sometimes they're in third person, sometimes they have no situational awareness, sometimes they don't lock targets and have no idea on how to target specific components, like... I mean, both his legs are cored red and you still shoot him in the face and miss? Please. That kind of new. How does this person get placed on the same team as me ... on the same team as aforementioned top-level players? How? Something's broken.

If the bulleted list I put above is an accurate summary of how matchmaker adjusts Elo, then I think that's the problem. It only factors the success/failure of the team and it doesn't take into account any individual statistics.

Elo works with Chess because one person plays against another person in Chess. If you beat that person, your Elo goes up, if you lose, it goes down. You're solely responsible for the outcome of the match and your Elo rating reflects your personal track record.

Elo works with League of Legends because there are only five people on a team in League of Legends. If the support player sucks, the AD carry and map awareness suffer. If the jungler sucks, the enemy jungler gets free reign to wreck your team. If either of your solo lanes suck, they either feed or lose turrets - their lane opponent gets more farm, this farm becomes momentum, and they carry the game by roflstomping everything in their path. The person on the team who failed to do their job can be directly held accountable for the outcome of the match because each of the five members of the team are critical to success. Similarly, one really stellar player on a team can outplay their lane opponent, get farm, get fed, and carry the game to victory single-handedly.

Elo doesn't work in MWO, because there are 12 people on a team.

The indisputably Best Player In The Game could be put on an average team, and if the two of the light pilots on that team go die in the first two minutes of the match and drag the medium in their lance along with them, and their collective peril causes one of the heavies to overextend and all four of them get rekt... now it's 0-4 the between the four of them, they dealt 100dmg to the enemy team. The team now has a great chance of losing the match and even if the Best Player In The Game manages to pull 5 kills and 1100 damage... they still lose Elo for reasons beyond their control.

Similarly, a single player could disconnect or suicide into the enemy team and accomplish nothing for the whole match. His team could then win that match by a landslide without him and his Elo could go up.

The point I'm making, is Elo in MWO doesn't make the individual accountable for his rating. Whether the individual gains or loses Elo is entirely dependent on how his team performs, and I think this explains why so many people complain about matchmaking yet PGI still thinks everything is fine and all hunky-dory. The numbers all look good, but what PGI isn't seeing are the inexperienced players being put at higher Elos than they deserve and the skilled players not being able to increase the rating that one they deserve.

The solution? Incorporate individual performance stats into the Elo algorithm. Make your personal match score a significant factor. Did you lose the match but you had the top match score on the team by a wide margin? Maybe you deserve a slight Elo increase because you obviously were better than all the scrubs on your team. Maybe you won the match but your match score was about the average on the team? Then perhaps your Elo should increase only by the tiniest bit. Maybe you got 15 match score but your team still won despite the fact that the only thing you managed to do was to run straight into the enemy team alone and get off one alpha before dying? Perhaps you don't deserve an Elo increase for that.

Those are the type of things I think need to be considered in order to build a fair matchmaker that accurately and quickly divides players into the varying Elo brackets they deserve to be in.

Or simply said the MM system really sucks that it is not tiered and more balanced. (closer numbers with closer numbers) of ELO ranking then seperated.

It is so bad of a concept.

I'm a relatively new player. I'm not the greatest player, but i can hold my own in a normal game. By normal I mean a game not during a challenge event. During a non-event game I average about 7-10 assits, 350-500 damage, and might get 1 or 2 kills. So like I said, I'm not a great player yet.

During a challenge event all of that goes out the window. I seem to get put on teams that are, for a lack of a better word, terrible. We usually get stomped pretty bad by the other team. Now I'm not saying that I didn't play bad in these games, just the teams seemed to have very different in skill levels.

During the raven challenge I started noticing just how unbalanced the MM can be. Some games my team would have 0 LRM and 0 ECM cover, while the opposing team would have 3-6 LRM boats and 3-4 ECM mechs. My team would freak out and sit still, eventually dieing to the other team. Now a good team, that comunicates and is somewhat organized, can win out in games like that, but no matter how hard I tried, or my other teammates, we would get stomped most of the time.

I went and looked at the games that I played during the raven challenge. I played over 60 matches, won 21 matches, and had 9 matches that counted towards the challenge. :( I didn't have a good weekend haha. I got my 3 days of premium time and was happy with that.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the matchmaker, or even if anything is wrong with it, but it seems that during events the matchmaker puts really good players/teams up against not so good players/teams. This makes for some not so fun experiences in a really fun and enjoyable game.

Just my opinion and observations.

matchmaker expects the better players to carry in Rambo queue rather than trying to tier players into similar level groupings.

Except isn't that exactly what it's already doing? If you have a history of winning more matches, you have a higher Elo, and you'll play alongside other high Elo players. Matchmaker only starts to broaden its search to include lower Elo players if you've been waiting in queue for over a minute. When anybody asks PGI, and I've asked before, the numbers are showing that teams are indeed playing "closer numbers with closer numbers" separated by people with higher numbers and people with lower numbers (and then everything in between). This is fact and can't be argued, we're playing alongside similar Elo players for the very most part.

The system is working fine under the constraints its given, it's the method of actually determining/affecting individual players' Elos that needs to be reconsidered in my opinion, because I don't think it's working. At all.

MfG, MEX

Aren't you the A hole that jumps mechs to the top of hills to make matches last 7 mins longer then they should?

considering that you are a low life in game troll, do you think your opinion should matter on anything?

I'm going to say this seriously:

I've been in the game since closed beta.

I can honestly say that the "elo" system offers no real improvement to matchmaking, than the old pre-elo random matchmaking system.

In fact I "feel" rolls on either side happen more often now than they did back then.

I think they should just scrap the elo system entirely and match by hard tonnage and/or class restrictions.

Right now they use "release valves" on the class matching, so you dont actually get a real 3/3/3/3 most matches. Usually over tonnage.

So scrap that elo, scrap release valves, and use a straight up first random MM that does true 3/3/3/3.

So agree, doing a 8 man drop and the other team was a 4, the matchmaker put us up against a hodge podge of teams. We are thinking, yeah we got this, to our surprise, we lost and lost badly, our team was following the 3/3/3/3, the other team cause they were hodge podge weren't, they had 6 assaults, from memory 2 DW, 2 BNE a Stalker and Atlas, no lights and only one or two mediums.

The only unfair aspect of the MM in my opinion, is ECM balance.
When one team has 2-3 or even more, and the opposing team gets 0.

Or I suppose facing an atlas and 3 stalkers against 4 direwhales.. that is unfair most of the time.

Call it what you want... I seem to be immune to the evil FS9 lagshield. Weapons hit me plenty well. Everyone keeps saying Hitreg is the worst it's ever been, but I've been able to kill other FS9's and spiders just fine since whatever fix they made in Jan. Only reason I was running the K was to finish out the Elite tier on it since I noticed it was still only basic.

60-70ms ping most of the time.

Point was with the 8 wins in a row it's not gonna matter what mech I bring I am about to go to a deep dark string of losses, and that right there shows how broken the MM is. When it intentionally tries to force losses on players for "balance"
