Just curious how the switching contracts works since I can't really seem to find any clear information about it in the game.
Obviously you'd have to abandon your current house/faction, but do you have to leave your group as well?
I imagine it would be easier if you weren't on a permanent contract, but some people like myself may have been gone from the game at the release of CW and drafted into a perm contract when they returned via their unit.
Looking at it now, the only option I see that resembles breaking a contract is the -leave unit- option. Is there another place a person should be looking for more info on this?

First you have to leave the unit, then you can break the contract.

Your unit collectively can have one and only one contract. If your unit is committed to FRR, as a member of the unit *you* are committed.
Only way out is to leave the unit

As far as I am aware, that is exactly what you need to do - leave the unit (at least temporarily) and break/choose a different contract on your own. It's something I will be doing shortly if my unit decides to stay FRR for the foreseeable future, since I'd like to visit other factions and earn rewards.

Is the break contract option only visible/available after you leave your unit then?

Several things to consider. And correct, your unit currently holds the contract. To break said contract, if you are not the CO, you have to leave the unit first, break contract, pay a fine, wait a few days before selecting a new contract.
Penalties
Now, if you are staying IS and not going Clan, then the drop window should offer more than just FRR worlds to defend (I could be wrong due to FRR state). Simply log into the other House's TS for defend drops.
Also, if you do leave the unit/faction, you do not have to join another unit for CW drops, you only have to select the new faction after the 2-day period as well as the contract length.
Penalties
- Leave unit in-game. Consider that they may not allow you back into said unit, esp if you show up in a clan faction fighting them.
- Break your FRR contract - cost in C-bills, dependent on length of time left on contract
- 2-day penalty period, a rest period. You are not able to join another fraction, immediately.

Your unit can also collectively break contract and move to a different faction. It will cost c-bills depending on the size of your unit.
