I played Battletech back in elementary and early high school, but it was in my college years that a found out about the open source, online version of the table top game MegaMek.
From there I found the only fan made MegaMek campaign server that was running the clan invasion campaign at http://www.mekwarslegends.com.
The site had gone idle in the last year, but the host is inquiring about interest in starting another long term campaign. A huge amount of custom coding had gone into the back end, and the invasion, defence, or inter-House warfare was entirely in the player bases hands. Each faction could choose to attack any planet that was in range of their boarders, and you could maintain a large stable of mechs, vehicles, battle armour, and even aerospace fighters to bring the fight to your peers! It was Community Warfare, but with all the freedom and choice that the universe could offer. The campaign really was in the players hands.
The battles were balanced using the BV (battle value) system that gave each individual mech and a BV value, rather than fighting by tonnage. Using this system, the battles were much closer and tactics were the primary factor for success.
If anyone here would be interested in learning the table top experience I highly recommend making an account and post on their forums here: http://mekwarslegend...p?topic=10995.0 that you would be interested in playing.
Meanwhile, if you have any questions about the experience, feel free to post them here and I'll do my best to answer them.
