Which trial mechs would you recommend that do work good without being elited/mastered and fully module equipped against, say, a deck of 2/2 TBR/SCR laser vomits?

Nothing really beats a TBR/SCR laser vomit. Those are basically the strongest and most weight efficient mechs in the whole game. It's not 2/2 tho, but TBR/3xSCR.

I just took a look on the trial mechs... Sorry, they are all kinda terrible when it comes to the vs Clan Meta. Well, actually most of them are just terrible by design.

That Victor can do damage, but it's kinda bad without mastering, very challenging and not really efficient enough for CW. The Banshee is useless because of it's XL. Thunderbolt/trebuchet are an inefficient mess of badly synergizing weapons and equipment. The griffin lacks firepower. The Raven is criminally underarmored.

Only the Spider and Quickdraw are solid. Former as a long range skirmisher, only coming closer to prey on damaged mechs (suffers a bit without efficiencies), QD should be an ok PPC-sniper, potentially with limited poptart ability (mind the mech is quite vulnerable).

edit: This is under the assumption you don't want to buy via MC and re-equpip the trial mechs?

Ok, 3:1 SCR/TBR. But nevertheless...

So what you're saying in a nutshell is, that for a beginner, CW is basically open, but unplayable - moreover, it will probably give him a bad experience, making it badder if condition IS and condition PUG are met too. So probably north of 75% of people relaitvely new to the game.

I actually have some 'Mechs. Even with them, doing CW as IS-PUG is an absolutely frustrating experience, which surely will scare off even more people from the already too small player base in CW, which is supposedly the core game mode.

The way it is now, CW is kind of an expert mode with a heavy bias towards Clans. I realize though, that Clan technology is supposed to be superior, according to lore. In my understanding, lore also says something about inferior numbers for clans in larger battles. Be it, because they are fewer people in general, be it because of their bidding system. And that's not taken into account in MWO, so the system itself does not work.

Yep. PGIs plan seems to be a slow movement towards balance, with detours into p2w territory.
There is a bit of irony in that hard mode thing, considering it's frequently easy mode for clanners.

I found a bunch of mechs which work pretty good for me against clans, though. Probably helps that Jager/Stalker became my favorite mechs after the closed beta and therefor heavily influenced my playstsyle. Efficient and systematic play are the best bet for IS mechs, at least in Pugs.

- First, the STK-4N. This is the one mech which can keep up and actually best a lot of the clan mechs. Compared to most clan-mechs, it's extremly sluggish and heavy, lacks versatility, but it's one of the best long range mechs in the game. Generally stalker are probably the best IS-assaults at this point.
- Thunderbolts have been nerfed, but the 9S ERPPC build is still efficient. Thunderwub can also hold his ground, although the clans range advantage can be pretty ugly. Notably one of the few IS-heavies where you can use big engines without crippling armament or survivability.
- Jagermechs are still good mechs when used correctly. Get the Jm6DD and a bunch of UAC's, and you'll get an insane amount of firepower. Just use the high weaponry and range to your advantage, because a single salvo can cripple you.
- Firestarters are just great (for lights). Strong if short-ranged weapons, high speed and good protection combined with some hitbox-magic.

So how hard is it to actually get 80 points in CW?

I did a couple matches some time ago but never really noticed my score at all.

What should I be expected to pull to get 80? Is it comparable to a 30 score in reg pug matches?

(asking this while waiting in queue, wondering if its worth me trying or if I should just forget the whole thing)

Lots of drop zone camping for the winning sides.

After match ends, check your points on the main page showing all 24 players scores

It's about as hard as 30 points in normal matches, or even easier, dependant on what kind mechs you bring. Good mid to long range fire support are the fastest way to get to 80, close combat is especially against clan very dangerous. Always mind: Go for the best way to deal safe damage, not for kills. The latter one will just come automatically, and otherwise aren't really important for getting points either. Chasing after kills on the other hand tends to kill yourself pretty fast.
I'm not the best to judge the difficulty, though. Playing pug since closed beta, i've got quite a bit of experience, as well as all the necessary mechs elited. Basically, all my decks are the best I can bring to the table. Usually varying iterations of Stalker/Firestarter and 2xJager/Thunder, which seems to work out just fine.
That basically ensures 80+ points in the worst situation.

Also, the current influx of players might make IS vs IS also more viable, take a look out for that. You'll get the fastest game when the defender and attacker numbers are similar, atm clans often have three defender and one attacker, which creates quite a bit of loading time.
I'd say at least go for five points and then decide if it's worth your time, additional premium time is always neat.

Thanks for the input.

Just played my first match, close defeat vs clan (40-48), had a good game, was third on my team with 239 points. I think only 1 person on our team didnt get the 80 mark. Guess its not that hard if you dont get rolled.

Sure feels like another weekend of trolling the IS with OP clan mechs. Hope PGI is getting whatever metrics they need. Maybe there will be some buffs to the IS and stop listening to the clan players telling everyone how it isnt their mechs but their skill.

I was hoping that the queue time would be shorter given that there is an event. Still waiting forever it seems to find a match on heavily populated servers. 9:30 PST on Friday isn't prime time?

I've got a more general question: After halve my matches i want to switch sides, break contract and go for clans to take a look how hard or easy it is for them. Does the switch - or battles against my former fraction - come with some form of loyality point or other penatly?

Nice to hear, sound like you're pretty well off. It's not even too hard to get the possible points when getting rolled.

never going to bother playing CW ever again clanmechs are just way too overpowered

That's because we're doing it the wrong way.

A very clear example is bringing LRM specialised mechs

C-Bill penalty for breaking contract and you have to finish what's left of a day before you can switch. So it might cost you a few hundred thousand C-Bills, and you'll still be Davion for up to 23 hrs depending on contract length.

You lose loyalty points for killing members of your previous faction I believe.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for those penalties and the timeframe.

Well, I decided to go ahead with the challenge and had the time to do 6 games before the ceasefire:

Its not that hard really, I think it was 3-3 W/L or something. Regardless of win or loss, I was able to get the 80 mark easy, and so were pretty much everyone else too.

So, besides the waiting in queue, I dont think this challenge should scare anyone, if some people wondered (like me at first, who was unfamiliar with CW).

Play intelligently, and its very doable.

I wouldn't even be playing CW if not for this tourney and I might not anyway. Even the games I've gotten 80 points on so far have been stomps against me by premades fighting pugs that always ended in spawncamping, and the others have ranged from similar (except worse) to base rushes where no one in the game got 80 points. Also, ghost matches.

I don't see how this is supposed to endear me to CW or to joining a unit. I don't want to be the one getting stomped or the jerks stomping them, nothing about this experience is fun to me. You can enjoy CW as much as you like but don't tell me I'm wrong for not having fun with it when this is the experience it's giving me.

Because there always needs to be someone to complain I'll say this: Blah, CW-only event, meh...

But I'll probably just opt out of it and do something else with my time. The 2 offered mechs don't interest me that much anyway.
