Crab and Direwolf are the slowest assaults, fastest you're going to go in a Direwolf is 53.5 Kph and 58.3 Kph in a Crab. They can carry the heaviest weapon loadouts but also lose their arms where those weapons are.
I've you're looking for a more durable, nimble assault try Banshees.

King Crab can torso twist like a beast though, which makes spreading damage while getting out of danger much easier than the Dire could ever hope for.

Skills up helps a bit but DW has a very limited twist range of Yaw - 60 degrees (72 degrees when skills are done) and 30 degrees for arms assuming you have all the actuators for arms. So your barely covering the front 180 degrees.
Why Lights love Harpooning Dire Whales. They get behind them and just shred.
Always handing to keep terrain nearby that you can back into. Stick with team too smart teammates will happily focus fire to help you out as its in there best interest. Lone Whale is dead Whale.

Its the most dangerous mech out there and easy to hit so ofc everyone going to focus you.
Its not because its fragile, its because you move slow and are big.
Atlas usually dont have as much firepower, Id rather focus some some heavy in xl.

The dire is a great turret but a poor mech. You have to do a lot of flanking or take on enemies 1 at a time. Don't try to tank for your team, your speed and torso yaw do not allow it. If you're caught in the open, you will die.
As the slowest mech on the battlefield you have to MOVE IT from the moment you spawn. If you are trying to catch up or get in cover do not stop and return fire, you'll just be focused and killed. Just accept the damage and be safe in cover. I see so many dire pilots stop and shoot back only to complain about being "left behind"

any direwolf ALONE will get targeted first. the point is to not be alone, be surrounded by the rest of your team. you will always get targeted first because of size, but a decently built DW will put a solid hurting on any mechs it sees. their alpha vs DW alpha is no comparison if the DW is built right. dual ERPPC + dual gauss is common in many DW builds...60 dmg spike in less than 1 second. most mechs hide from that. cooldown is negligible with enough heat sinks. prefer more pin point, swap out ERPPC for LPL.
if you dont like the DW, then dont pilot one. you cant use the same tactics as you would a smaller faster mech.

I recently bought a new set of DWF's with the clan sale. Right off the bat, I had a couple of monster games - top damage in both winning and losing causes. High damage, not a lot of kills yet because I was laughing too hard to aim the UAC spam. I thought it was going to be an awesome mech.
Then I went on one of the longest losing streaks and <200 damage games I've ever had in any mech. My Kill/Death AND Win/Loss ratio are atrocious in this thing. I haven't sucked this hard in an Assault mech since the VTRs got nerfed. Easily the most painful grind to get this thing up to Elite.
At least with my Banshees, I was able to tank damage and help the team win that way. With this DWF, I'm really struggling. I guess it goes without saying but I've never been focused so hard and killed so frequently in any other mech. We'll see what mastering this chassis does to improve its playability.
