PGI are making money by selling stuff like every other company. You only pay if you're too impatient to wait for things because you can get it all for free apart from hero mechs or gold skins that give no advantage.
There's no 15k SC ship by the way. You're thinking of the pledge package where people who donated that much to fund the game got all the ships and some other stuff like meeting Chris at the studio in return. You can get all the SC ships for free in the game too. In the case of SC none of the money raised goes to profit. It all goes to making the game and they start taking profit after release.

A bad match will net me 140 ~ 180k in a 10~ minute match with Premium or Hero/Prime.
Your earnings are directly related to how well you play. There are some days where i get more c-bills on a well played loss than i do on a reasonable win.
Its kind of funny, Damage and Component Destruction are our biggest sources of C-Bills yet the 'meta' has evolved to destroy targets with minimal damage done ...

So don't give them any money. They aren't making you pay them. As you yourself has said, MW:LL was better, as are many other games that you pay sixty bucks or less for. So do what I do, buy those other games and don't spend more than sixty bucks here. I managed to get two years out of this one and tons of 'mechs so it can be done. And unlike those who spent hundreds or thousands, I don't feel any obligation to keep playing when I get sick of it because of my limited monies I paid into this one.

The grind isn't as bad as you say, unless you're a very unskilled player, but I will concede that the game is quite grindy from the start. It took me a while to get a good mech set up that allows me to perform as well as I do.
The cost of premium time isn't as bad as you think. $15/month is generally accepted as the standard subscription cost for MMOs these days. If you buy Premium Time in 6 month chunks, it costs about the same as your standard MMO subscription. I can't remember the exact math, as the $ cost of MC varies based on how much MC you buy at once, but I believe buying 1 year of Premium Time comes out to about $9/month, almost half the cost of your standard MMO sub if you buy the $100 MC bundle.
If you buy the $100 MC bundle to buy your PT, you're playing the game for pretty cheap. That's a full year of PT plus some money for a skin, warhorn, some colors, etc.
Buying mechs for MC is the real money sink. I bought a Hero mech of each weight class, which cost about $40 total, and the rest of my MC is for PT only. I just swim in Cbills, and it was probably a $130 investment, which is still cheaper than subscribing to 1 year of your standard MMO, even factoring in reduced $/month pricing for buying multiple months.
