Even with jump jets nonfunctional, I wonder, why nobody pilots the Highlander anymore... is it... there can be only one?

I think it's mainly because HGN can't boat lasers and/or ballistics. Because of the small number of hardpoints, they need to mount heavy weaponries. And on top of that, you need to use SRMs if you want to pack a big punch and that means getting close to the enemies.

It's basically a jumping and more dexterous Atlas.

Well, unless the Mauler does LRMs the best of any Assault, I'm not sure how it would make LRMs worse.

Maybe worst case dcenario in the short term when it first launches, but then the LRM boaters will go back to their boat of choice.

I think the Mauler would be nice considering how Iconic it is.

We particulary don't need anything.

I rather have the next few months patches of bugfixes, perhaps asset-redesign and adjustment of excisting map then another new mech..

The modellers can spend their time on improving current assets. The quality of some mechs are poor.

that doesnt change the fact that many people here even abuse the atlas as lrm assault. *shudder*
so it is an issue. sadly.
just like any sort of boating. the mauler will get abused as well.

We'll see the Cyclops first, unless PGI is willing to make up two fantasy variants for the Mauler.

If i recall correctly sometime ago the NGNG guys said Flying Debris already was working on the Mauler MWO version drawings..

Considering that in the past PGI had like 14-16 mechs already developed in advance (Drawings for models dones just lacking the textures/ingame models) that Mauler may be a not so remote possibility

Back when JJ's were "unfixed" and poptarting was the meta, the HGN was THE king of the battlefield. It had mobility, great HP's and locations, and the weight to carry almost as much weaponry as an atlas. Alas, the HGN's declined from superiority and now sit in the dusty cobwebbed corners of many players' mechbays.

What made the HGN so good, to me at least, was the 90 ton sweet spot they hit. 90 is the "Goldilocks Zone" of tonnage for an assault and it allowed for the best mechbuilding and variability in loadouts out of any mech.

Any speculation of another 90 tonner in the future? They can give it the most terrible hitboxes and I wouldn't care, as long as it was 90 tons and had a great HP layout.

Aside from not understanding what is so good about 90T to make it a "sweet spot", you can play the HGN right now and just ignore the JJs if you like the loadouts and that weight.

That's really the main thing holding the Highlander back.

It has something of a small engine size, but 325 STD is probably as big as you'd really want to go anyway and going XL you'd not want to go smaller than 375 probably.

The slight buffs it got to accel and top speed (67kph or so with 325) are just enough to be noticeable, nothing huge, but nice.

Change the word to 'misused' and I'm with you.

Abused in these games implies powerful which LRM assaults aren't

I guess each person has a different sweet spot, sometimes is a mixture of tonnage, speed, possible firepower and maneuravility.

I as example feel way more comfortable in a Dragon running at 90-100 kph than in a shadowhawk at similar speeds despite being both virtually identical in turn speed/ agility.

It looks like an Atlas and Gargoyle mix with a Summoner or Thunderbolt launcher.

In either case, looks to organic to me. Sort of like a dude wearing a green goblin mask and BMX body armor.

Do not want anyway.

It's the Akuma, from the Draconis Combine Field Manual. It was produced in the 3058'ish era (roughly the same time MRMs and IS Streak 4/6's made an appearance).

Heh, that "launcher" is a MRM 30, which fired an Anime-level of redonkulous number of missiles at its target (heard of laser vomit? This is definitely missile regurgitation )

The Cyclops is uhh, a light Atlas. It really doesn't bring anything different to the table except being ten tons lighter.
Base Loadout:
Nothing wrong with it, but it's rather boring, the Mauler would be a more fun addition to the game.

There was definitely a problem with it: being extremely under-armored, especially for one of the heaviest Assault mechs out there (10 tons of standard armor I believe it was?). I do love the concept and lore behind it though. Sadly, it was just developed poorly till its later incarnations appeared.
