The game is a lot of fun, however, it has a very steep learning curve. It's highly recommended that once you download the game that you go straight to the tutorial which will teach you about basic movement, weapon grouping, heat management, and the location based damage system. It's very bare bones kind of information as it does not teach you about the mech lab and other important things. Fortunately, PGI will be making the tutorial more in depth in the near future as well as streamlining the mech lab.

When you start you will have what are called cadet bonuses for your first 25 matches which will net you greater amount on C-Bills ( in game currency). The amount you earn should be enough for you to buy 3 Inner Sphere Medium mechs and kit them out. It's recommended that the best Mediums for beginners are the Hunchbacks and Centurions. Shadow hawks are also recommended but they tend to much more pricier to not only buy but also to kit out, mostly because the best Shadow hawk builds use what are called XL Engines, which weight is half as much but makes you squishier due to the fact if you lose a side torso your dead, where as STD Engine do not have this problem but are much heavier.

Several other things to mention. After your cadet bonuses expire the game will not informe you about how much money and XP you gained in a match so it some time seams like you are not making any money when in fact you are.
You can check on your gains right when the game ends when it's showing the score, you simply need to click on the tab on the right which will tell you how much you made and your overall personal performance. If you exit the match before hand you will not be able to see how much you gained for that match, unless your some kind of bean counter and keep track of your wallet and XP.

You can't customize trial mechs, the mechs that are free for you to use, and the ones you will be using for a bit till you buy your own mech.
To buy your own mech, simply go into the mech lab tab, and there will be a bar at the top of the mechs you can chose from. Klick that tab bar and set it to "purchasable". There you can pich which mech you want to buy.
When buying a mech, it's important to check out a mechs quarks by hovering your mouse over the mech.
You also need to go through 3 mechs of the same chassie (not the same variant) in order to progress through their skill tree. The skill tree for mechs GREATLY improves the performance of your mech.

To save you a lot of time and money when thinking about customizing your mech, check out "Smerfy mech lab" on the internet.

I know that's a lot to take in but it will save you a lot of time and frustration. Also, don't worry about being stomped and losing and dieing a lot, your new, this is not COD where you can jump in and Rambo, well, you can, but it will end badly. Stick with your team, shoot at what your team is shooting at (as long as the enemy is within your range) as well as still hang around and watch how other people play on your team by spectating them when you die. Trust me, you will die, a lot, we have all been there. So take that time spectating your team and learn the does and donts.

One more thing, stay out of Comunity Warfare, that is hard core mode to the max.

Good luck and good hunting.

Sure thing, also, Koniving is another guy you want to know as he is a wealth of information and is also very friendly.

I'd also like to mention that communication is key, so having a mic will make things so much easier. Get the NGNG TS client right away when you can.

If you have a mic you can still communicate with you team in game thanks to Voip. Just thought to throw that out there.

As for to get the NGNG TS client, all you need to do is go to NGNG website and from there it will walk you through on getting their client.

Yes, the game is good. But, you definitely have to stick through some frustration at the beginning. I recommend setting small manageable goals at the start. 1st, survive till the end of the match. Then consistently get 100 damage, the. 150. Etc. Visit the forums often and ask questions about anything. Nothing is a dumb question we all understand that it is hard to find all the information all on your own. I have never seen the phrase "try doing a forum search." Used by this community ;) and I have seen the same question asked multiple times and the same people patiently answer them all. In general you will find this community very friendly especially here in the new player forum. Feel free to friend me in game. if you find me online I would be happy to walk you through the UI and mechlab.

To clarify, NGNG is an acronym for "No Guts No Galaxy," a popular MWO website and podcast. They have an open Teamspeak server where people can drop in and group up. Most players won't mind helping a newbie as long as you're polite. Just let them know that you're new and they'll probably give you tips as you play. Here are some links:

NGNG Teamspeak Info:

Teamspeak Download:

The game can be very different (and much more enjoyable) when playing with a group, especially when you have someone leading and calling the shots.
