Fans have been asking for PGI to monetize features like this for a long time now. I have too. I'd be much more interested in paying for the features I want, instead of simply having the option of paying for mechs and waiting to see if PGI gets around to implementing those features.
However, it looks like PGI is fairly set on their business model of selling mechs. They're still very popular and I predict they will continue to sell well as long as they keep pushing fan favourites. And when they push the timeline to 3060 and beyond, there's a whole bunch of mechs people are going to pay for.
It just depends on whether or not they can keep folks interested for that long. Which is rather uncertain.

But then it becomes an even higher tax to people who have premium time.
What if solaris can be bought separately, but PT includes it automatically?

Aye. Your assuming most already have premium time and or get it. I personally don't use it often as I consider it a waste, I can max get 1-2 hours a day so PT doesn't make sense for me (except for when I specifically take a day off then it's PT all the way). What I, as a casual player, want to avoid is needing to purchase a months worth of premium time so I can play Solaris. If that we're the case id probably only play Solaris with free PT, or again, on the odd day that I take off to specifically play.
Maybe PT = free entry. Can still subscribe to Solaris.

OK question if they did Solaris with 1v1, 2vs2 etc and all the things people want with Solaris would you be OK with it being ONLY a playable if you have Premium Time? With maybe 24 man game modes being free?
The reason I ask is because it would take more servers for them to run lots of games with small groups of people in them. Also it would help pay for development for Solaris so people could get the features they want.
So what do you think??
Edit - Possibly having a Solaris pack and the Solaris based sale items later on would do the trick. You get both money up front and then more income later. It also seems like it would work better as an esport to help get players into the game.

I've said this since people showed PGI that they would actually pay real money for additions to the game like the Urban Drek. Just offer real money for anything you want added and there is a immensely increased chance of it happening. What's wrong with paying for new stuff? People want new maps and modes and PGI, despite their separation from IGP isn't putting much work into things that don't immediately return real money as things are so bad they had to offer new variants to entice spending on the latest cash grab. Clearly things aren't going well in PGI land so why not offer to help and pay real money if you want PGI to actually work on things. You think these folks are going to invest any real effort or money on this game without an immediate return? I mean PGI even said they can't be viable with only one game and as we saw Transverse bombed. You think another PGI project is going to attract a lot of cash....LMAO. So this is a holding pattern of how much cash they can extract from the fans before the license runs out.
Anyways, I say offer real money for additions and they might actually occur as opposed to PGI saying they will occur, much like PGI said they were working on CW when they weren't. Got to admit that the Urban Drek got turned around quick when people tripped over themselves to give them real money for it. So why not capitalize. I mean you folks are going to give them money anyways, why not get something out of it. I mean how many heroes can you buy and how many cockpit items can you even hold in them? PGI needs money and people certainly aren't paying enough currently.

At one time OP it cost almost nothing to run in-game servers or even a MSN GAMMING ZONE TYPE LOBBY system 1v1-12v12 because they were run on the clients ISP server. The older PC MechWarrior games used a much better server system than MWO'S server side setup.
If you don't know what I mean please download a copy of MechWarrior4 Mercenaries trial and look at the multiplayer setup or go on GameRanger.com to see the lobby setup. With todays technology PGI could redo the private system in MWO back to PC MechWarrior multiplayer build a new lobby system or use ten's MWOLOBBY.com.
It should be noted all this was talked about 3 years ago an it should be free for everyone. MWO is this totally unsocial game that never changes its the same 12v12 matches constantly I am totally surprised MWO has lasted this long GO FIGURE.I personally was brain dead from the same type of game play 2 years ago and now play sparingly to see what happens to MWO more than it is fun.
The devs in some respect are total control freaks just like they were back at Mektek and NBT they have not changed and there narrow vision and mindset have killed MWO in many ways from becoming a truly great game. Like I said many times bring back the old lobby system from PC MechWarrior (MSN GAMMING ZONE STYLE make it free to play on 1v1-12v12 matches let the community be involved making leagues and rebuild itself to higher player numbers and they will spend money on MWO items.
A friend once said =( Build it and they will come) he was way ahead of his time when he designed and built the MSN gamming zone for Microsoft (GhostRider) and his ideas would still work today for MWO.The thing is will PGI listen before the MWO servers die from lack of players and $USD support?

Well FFA could be free (haha free for all is free for all X) ) and other modes could be accessable via a solaris 7 extension pack. Create an lore background that people have to pay a one time fee for the first entrance in the professional mode where as FFA is amateur.
There won't be cbill bets on amateur mode, but everyone can bet cbills on professional matches.

Rethinking this whole "pay per Solaris match" thing - I think PGI should go this route:
Put together a Solaris "junk-pack"
4 (Randomized) Mechs (encompassing all weight classes)
Including a choice of camo, and 3 colors
Warhorn
$25
Solaris "Power-pack"
4 (Randomozed) Mechs (50% chance of champion- guaranteed 1 champ) of every weight class
Same
Same
$50
Solaris "Gold-Pack"
Same except hero
Same
Same
$75
Must purchase one pack to open Solaris on your account. That should get PGI some new servers for Solaris + extra cash for newbies who want to get in on the action.

Kinda like a Solaris fund raiser.
