There isn't really any pay to win about MWO. You can very easily work up to one mech (despite it normally being a fairly unreasonable grind) and win against those who paid real money. It's more of a "pay to have more fun/options/progress" since paying just gets you more stuff faster, but not necessarily better stuff.

Where Does Mwo Fall On The Free To Play/ Pay To Win Spectrum?

Thanks for all the input ppl. It has all been very helpful and encouraging. I even picked up quite a bit of useful information on how to approach earning the various currencies. I do tend to spend more money, if I spend it, on things that will bring a return on that investment (read "not cosmetic) or help me enjoy the game more (read "not grind quite as much"). I also anticipate the grinding in this game to be less drugery and more fun just b/c I like mech combat so much. This is all very encouraging to me. Now I just need to fix a few technical issues and find out "how to do everything". But that's another post.

Glad to be able to help. There's a pretty steep learning curve, some have even called it a wall or a cliff. But there is a top to it. Feel free to ask any questions at all, and I hope to see you on the battlefield.

No pay to win here man . . . this is one nice piece of free to play and skill based game.
From my opinion
Only one thing you need to buy with real cash are mechabys, but PGI throwing some for free during events, so keep your eyes open . . .

It definitely is not P2W as others have mentioned. The only time it might have been was during the early access to the first clan wave before game balance changes were implemented. Even then that was early access. Like most F2P games if you want to enjoy it fully I'd suggest strongly of buying some MC (IF you like the game) so you can get consistent premium time (this is normal in F2P games).

It's not P2W. It's pay to reduce the grind and obtain more competitive Mechs/weapons quicker.

You can spend C-bills and pick up some "basic" colors. In fact i use some of the basic colors on many of my paint jobs. They are pretty decent.. I need color in my life, and i get so bored with seeing green!

Pay to Win - When real-world currency can buy meaningful in-game advantages that will never be available to all free players.
Pay for Convenience - When real-world currency can increase the pace of in-game earnings, or allow early access to features that will be available to all free players at a later date.
The former is a really bad thing, the latter is one of the two pillars of good Free to Play mechanics (cosmetics being the other).
MWO does not have the first one, and it has been making excellent use of the second. There was a brief flirtation with P2W when they first announced consumables, but PGI did some rapid reworking when the forums pointed out the flaws with their proposed ideas and now it's not an issue at all.

Basic blue and purple are my favorite! Well worth the c-bills.
