Missile Boxes... An Ancient Forgotten Thing

It is obvious that sometime in the past PGI have considered them (like extra racks of MW4).

Now that we have lego mechs, (dynamic weapon visuals) these boxes which sometimes are the iconic signature of a chassis are totally removed, creating some odd looks and some un-foreseen effects (looking at you timber). Moreover, a mauler with no missile box will be no different in shape to a banshee for example.

My suggestion is that PGI can consider adding those boxes while still having dynamic weapons. extra armor in builds can be avoided by applying damage reduction to those boxes for each torso. (like how missile doors operate). This way a timber can not take advantage of something that was not meant to be and the upcoming mauler will retain its iconic shape without sacrificing survivability.
damage reduction can vary between different mechs. (it can also be tweaked via quirks)
