I have been thinking a lot about the BT universe and how it would translate into MWO. I think that the game has a lot of potential to become one of the best Mechwarrior games out there.
The game would really benefit from adding a lot of story elements to suck the player into the situation. For instance, the Clan invasion was felt by all powers of the Inner Sphere, even the Capellan Confederation saw broadcasts about the Clans invading (eventhough they never fought the Clans themselves during the invasion).
Having the game essentially tell the player a story would go a long way, recent games like Deus Ex and Skyrim dial this up to eleven and it shows.
My personal tips to execute this:
1. Ingame newsbroadcasts, having INN/Comstar broadcast the news would add to it. This was done before in MW2:Mercs, it was fun to read about events you may or may not get involved in. This would also be a great tool for Mercs to seek out hotspots.
2. Have missions that take place during important events. This might work best as coop against AI opponents. In other cases it would work well with player vs player battles. The Battle of Luthien comes to mind here. Not every skirmish was won by the IS side, a match could take place during this event without impacting the canon outcome.
3. Post battle reports/aftermath, MW2 really shined here, it took pages from the Refusal war scenariobook. Doing something like this for MWO would be rather easy since everything has already been established.
4. Minor details and quirks, it is the small things that breathe life into the BT experience. For instance, have the Clan mechs ID'd as "Unknown Mech" when the Clans first show up. Alternately, have a Timber Wolf ID'd as Marauder and/or Catapult. People unfamiliar with the story would get a good firsthand taste of what transpired in the "Blood of Kerensky" trilogy.
5. Don't be scared to throw around references to past evens like the 4th Succession war or the War of 3039, these sorts of things would only encourage players to look it up on the Internet. This would potentially generate more interest in DLC scenarios set in those era's.
Just my two cents.
