What's the point in such short names? after RVN-3L(C) I can just add 3 characters.
Unless server disk space is severely limited I would recommend to allow longer names, selecting mechs in CW does not show the configuration so more descriptive names would be really welcome.

You can give 'Mech nicknames in your hanger, which will be presented as that. The designations are basically the serial number of your 'Mech. People will always see that to be able to discern between the 'Mechs on the field and judge their capabilities. If i could Name my Locust AS7-D-DC and people could see that, you can probably imagine the amount of troll that would ensue.

I was referring exactly to that, I don't need other people to see names I give my mechs. The mechlab name itself is too short.

You can do plenty of descriptive names within the 12-character limit. You simply have to be creative about it.
You already know what type of 'Mech it is, so delete the variant name. Then use 12 characters' worth of shorthand to get the important parts that differentiate it from other 'Mechs in your hangar.

But imagine the amount of AWESOME that would ensue from that as well! personally I think that instead of your title.. the hud should show your Mechs names if you want it to.
