...all the best places to fight are OUTSIDE of the gates. So...unless defenders regularly push out of the gates, all that great space and terrain is going to see almost no usage.

Because, "sniping is easy (no skill, no risk) mode" remember?
Sniping, especially while in the air (limited time to line up your target makes it EASIER) is a huge issue and ruins the game. Anyone who snipes is just using a crutch.
/sarcasm off

Heres a top down of one of the War Thunder maps, which are much, much better.
The only impassable terrain is the deep parts of the rivers. This is what we want. Open, dynamic, thousands of vantage points and places to hide. Thousands of lines of sight.
I really want War Thunder to put out a kill heat map, because im willing to bet, it has one of the best distributions of kills in modern gaming.
It took them some time to get them right, but they blow World of Tanks away in the map department. World of Tanks has a few good maps (theres a snow one that comes to mind) but almost all of them still boil down to fights at one of three choke points, or all of those choke points, down specific lanes, which is boring as watching paint dry.
View from the ground:
Rolling hills, berms, trees topping the hills, MWO can use more rocks and fluff models to break up LoS since we can shoot through our trees, (PGI needs to call SpeedTree ffs).
More like Forest Colony, but without giant terrain features that are wholely impassable.

couldnt agree more on the adv zoom thing, that fact you can only get 4x zoom with a special module is about as lol as you can get in 31st century...
some WoT maps do have lanes indeed Krafty, but you are furthering my point which is to give us maps we can actually have BATTLEFIELDS on whether it be war thunder style WoT style or ANYTHING other then what keeps getting dumped on us. and no the new map is not good at all yea it looks pretty but its a rubbish map for anything but you standard brawl.
give us the ability to have BATTLES please god, where a recon light is worth a shite and NASCAR isnt the norm, battles shouild be dynamic and changing, of course there needs to be the close in your face brawls as well

My problem with the maps is just the lack of imagination. This is a Science Fiction unverse set in space. Yet most of the maps could just be random places on Earth with a slightly generic scifi bent.
Not every planet has blue skies or green flora, where are the bio-luminescent lakes or the multi colored forests, the rolling vibrant fields of alien wild flowers, the mercury rains storms or the moons with horizons dominated by gas giants and binary stars. The asteroid installations with visible ships in the sky and multi colored nebulae in the background. Space in real life is host to some of the most stunningly beautiful vistas one can imagine - why is MWO so intent on making it look so drab and dull. Every map is basically mono-chromatic. White, Brown, Grey, Green. One color dominates every map which is just.. boring. Give me something as creative as Avatar's Pandora.
Also I really want to see maps given real characteristics to make them more than just reskinned arenas. Gravity should vary from map to map affecting things like fall damage and jump jet performance, some maps should have thicker (or thinner) atmospheres that change the behavior of ballistics or energy weapons (increasing or decreasing range). More maps should have weather effects like Frozen City, storms and environmental hazards. Give us unstable planets that shudder from tectonic tremors or frozen moons with erupting ice volcano's.
The possibilities are litterally endless, nothing they imagine could trump what's likely really out there.. so please give us something that doesn't just look like a generic Modern Military Shooter map got a slight scifi redecoration..
