LMAO, I won't proclaim I'm some proz esports mechwarrior but I have several times today led the charge in my medium for fun LRM Centurion. Totally changed the course of the battle. Even got a couple of kills or three in and I'm surprised how I get the top score fairly frequently. The score is very much dependent on the map I must admit. It's fun to charge in and actually see a trail of 4 or 5 other mechs following. Some times it works great and some times it falls apart. So what. Main thing is to take an idea that appeals to you and see what happens.
My friends and I noted in EVE that the worst people to give new players advice are veterans. That game is so complex and has changed so much that veterans have no idea how to introduce someone to the game. The best advice still is to get your hands dirty and try things out. OP is asking, give him some pointers, then let him get his hands dirty. No need to press him with your personal dogma on MWO.

I have fun playing the game, win or lose. Do I like to win? Yes. Do I have fun only winning? No.
Here are my goals in order for a game I play:
- Have fun.
- Explore the game.
- Win.
Notice winning isn't my top goal? It's a game. I play games to have fun. Yes, while I'm in a match of MW:O, I aim to win the match. However, I'm not going to play a mech I feel is boring or one that I hate to make myself try to win more. I'm going to lose at some point along the way. I might as well enjoy the ride along the way, win or lose. Right?
A close match is typically more fun than a roll. Sometimes, people make the game fun no mater the match outcome by their in game chat (some people make it funny when you lose, which makes that lose fun instead of boring). Sometimes, your team played a great tactic, and it was a slugging match for 5 minutes of intense combat with no one dropping on either side. Such fun, and then people start to drop like flies on your team. Ends up being a stomp, but everyone on the enemy team are also ready to drop at a slight breeze. Sometimes, you end up in a great 1v1 situation, you prevailed after some great action, only to find out the rest of your team didn't fair so well, and you've lost.
So yes. I can have fun losing. I don't aim to lose, but I have fun even if I lose.
