I've seen it all. Laser Vomit, LRM boats, Dual Gauss, Quadruple Gauss, you get it.

But What I've yet to seen is people actually making mechs that are balanced.

For me, one of the most balanced mechs I've made, is my Summoner PRIME.

It's got the Pulses, the Mediums, and the LRMS.

I hear people always talking about how bad boating stuff is, but still beg to differ when people try to discuss making more viable and understandable builds.

So here's a few of my own for you:

BlackJack-1

Wolverine-6R

Orion-M

Nova-Prime

Now, some of you may think "Bah, these builds are not viable!!!" but hey, at least they're my favorite builds to play with. Anyways feel free to talk about you're favorite balanced mechs and such.

Viable and optimal are very different terms, particularly when one doesn't specify exactly what standard they are using. An optimal solo pug build is not the same as an optimal comp build, after all. And almost every (reasonable) build is viable for solo queue play where Elo will eventually compensate (hence why you see people rabidly defending really poor builds).

Sorry, had to chip that in. I know you weren't, but it was relevant to the topic :)

Balanced builds are viable in pug play, and sometimes optimal for solo play where you need to be self reliant and will have to fight under varying circumstances .

PIRATES' BANE

YEN-LO-WANG

Those are honestly the two mechs I spend most of my time in, they can do their jobs well, and are strong enough to go into normal drops of CW drops with little to no effort on my end for adaption.

No problems, I like to hear people's opinion if it isn't like, you know, over the top.

I see your BJ-1, and raise you my current BJ-3 build.

It is a lovely, balanced skirmisher that can also poke at range. It runs incredibly cool and that PPC fires almost as fast as an AC/10. It's not top-tier or anything, but really fun to play anyway.

Actually, I have a bunch of builds I run on Blackjacks that are not really boats. All of them seem to be on the BJ-1DC, though:

BJ-1DC LB-10X

BJ-1DC AC/2+ERLL

BJ-1DC AC/2+SL

They each have their range biases, of course, but they are all pretty fun to play.

I also run:

JM6-S

JM6-DD

JM6-DD AC/2

I won't include the Locust-1M in here since 2xSRM2 and 2xML is pretty much the only way to run it.

I had a lot of fun with my SHD-MiniVic back in the day. It's the sort of fit that gives comp players spasms, but it's also the first thing I think of when my mind wanders to the difference between 'varied' or 'balanced' fits and 'scattered nonsense' fits.

Balanced fits are something like my old MiniVic; a number of different weapon types which still nonetheless manage to complement one another decently well, and which plays in a given role/range bracket without losing firepower. Scattered nonsense on the other hand, brings an LRM-10, and SRM-4, a Streak SRM-2, a medium laser, two small lasers, a flamer, and an AC/5, and figures they're doing great because they've got the perfect weapon for any situation.

Don't be that guy...he doesn't win fights q_q

My favorite balanced build is the Wubhawk.

For fighting opponents at long range, it uses Large Pulse Lasers. For medium-range combat, it uses Large Pulse Lasers. For short range fights, it uses Large Pulse Lasers. It carries weapons to use in every range bracket. ^_^

My favourite CN9.

Yes, it's an XL Cent. Yes, it has a single LRM-5. Yes, it has an AC/10. Is it "competitive"? Probably not. Is it viable in PUGlandia where I play? Hell yes:
