I have mastered at least one variant of three different mechs per each weight class.
i.e. 1x Atlas, 1x Gargoyle, 1x Daishi at master level.

If I want to master say a Highlander now, do I really need to buy three Highlanders for
the basic level?

And if so, do you get the X2 multiplier if you only do the basics on the two additional Highlanders?

If this is how this works, I am not going to buy another mech. Getting 16 mechs fully upgraded
and slotted was expansive and time consuming enough. I was hoping to finally reap some rewards.

Yes, you have to get all the basics on three Highlanders. However, after getting just the basic skills you can sell your two unwanted highlanders, then get Elite skills and Master on the remaining highlander because you've got the Elite sets on 2 other assault mechs.
