I don't really care if you agree with me or not but i think this is a good idea. Make the goons the clans. For the most part people hate the clans and just want there technology. Also most people hate the goons.
I don't, but i think that it would be an easy way to toss them into a situation that they generally try to make for themselves anyways. Read the forums. Most people think of the goons and the clans in about the same light. And the goons really don't care. As one of them has even said they have given us a great evil to fight against. Why not use that deep seated hatred to the games advantage and make them the clans or at least give them the option of switching over in mass i think they would take. Now please don't turn this into a flame war but i think a little discussion on the matter will end up being a neat thing to read.

Who are these "goons" you speak of?

The goons are the http://www.somethingawful.com community. The are a masive forum group that is generally unliked due to the fact that they dont recruit from the outside and do what ever it takes to win. They are generally well organized and like to play as super communist or what ever faction in a game is thought of as evil. I think that they are what crops up when you have any group of people who come together due to a peculiar type of humor. If you want a good example of what they are capable of check out the game eve online. Personally i think they would make a great clan group as most of the hardcore BT guys seam to really dislike them.

Unless they adhere to the Clans societal idiom, they will not be good for the game. They will drive off more than would be desireable.

@CavemanSmash, I doubt you know the mind of the average Hardcore BT fan (for I am one and could care less about what the Goons are or do.). Regardless, if "Hardcore BT guys" do not like the Goons, as you suggest, it is because any BT based game does not really fit the playing environment necessary for Goons to thrive - otherwise we would have seen them in all the other iterations of MW in ladder or planetary leagues. We did not. EVE, where they abound, has a limited back story that was extremely young, infantile almost - nothing on the scale of BT. That can be said of ANY game the Goons play.

And for any of you that do not like the Clans, the Exodus events in the fiction should have told you that the SDLF would be back, and not in a good way as far as the IS is concerned. The fiction and story background foresaw the Clans and those who do not think the Clans should never have entered "the game" at all really know nothing about the BT milieu -- the only thing you got from the Clans' entry was that you did not like getting beat.

I love the clans ;). Neither side is good or bad, they are just stepper ate factions made up of there own groups fighting for what they think is right.

And to the poster above me I imagine it was just a typo but it's the SLDF (Star League Defense Force)

Because the Clans are a respected part of the Battletech community, with thousands of fans, immense in-depth stories, and general awesome. I tell you this for your own good, because a horde of angry clanners will probably attempt to ban you for even suggesting this. i would recommend that YOU read forums and discern the difference between goons and clans. Attempting to turn an important part of BT into the playground of a immature group of people with nothing better to do is both stupid and repulsive.

Pfft, I've been a hardcore clanner for 15 years. As soon as I can switch to Jade Falcon I'm doing it. I don't have anything against the IS, but I've been playing Jade Falcons since I was first introduced to CBT.

Our TT group even went and made up our own home brew original clans and played them so long that I forgot they weren't canon. We worked on those things for years! XD

Clans are special in the way they could sacrifice victory for the sake of fair play.

Goons would rather get tortured in hell than to be just another, normal group of people. Attentionwores if you prefer the term.

Umm... okay. Wow. If I had to guess, I would guess the Original Poster confused some comments about "clan" in other posts (or maybe just personally didn't like them for some reason?) As for the "goons" the OP mentioned, I think he/she has just been burned by them (as I am sure many have) or known others who have... and wished that, in a perfect world, said group of people would automatically belong to a specific "clan" ("merc corps", etc) that would allow others to easily identify them.

But, OP, to address your concern about the group you mentioned, it is likely they will all form their own group anyways within the game anyways, isn't it? Regardless of what they call their organization ("clan", "merc corps", etc). Or am I misunderstanding this group's tactics? Do they keep their affiliation a secret and try to infect all other guilds/clans/groups, or, do they flaunt their affiliation and typically form their (infamous) group in each game?

If by respected you mean despised, and fans you mean people new to BattleTech, and in-depth you mean terrible, and general awesome you mean unbalanced, and words you mean ha ha no.

I was attempting to be nice about it, however your lack of tact still is right. They are above goons though.,
