That's right, I'm bringing it back.
Why?
I have a new idea for it.
So, we know that Clan mechs may become OP because Smaller = More Tonnage. But I believe we can do this, but here's an idea.
Each mech only has 2 different engines (3 in total, including original engine) that they may change to, ranking in Slow, Average, and Fast.
The Summoner, for example, has a XL 350. It's engine is classified as fast, in that it, basic, can go 81 KPH. It has the available engines to change into: a XL 260 or a XL 290.
This alone gives it 7-9 more tons to use, allowing it to mount more ammo or weapons.
Of course, I wouldn't say this without having some sort of limit to it. There will be nerfs to the average engines, and less for the slowest engines.
Like say, a -5% to Ballastic or Laser cooldown, or even negative armor quirks.

That might happen in Dark Age or after, in the current timeline that just wouldnt be done, according to Canon.

Issues with smaller engines can come with heatsinks.
That said, a 375XL would give Mr Gargles 7 tons of pod space whole still moving 83.5Kph.
Myth Lynx could easily go 225 or 250 XL and not be a joke, with the AP and a JJ or two removed.
Nova can add Endo, 300XL, drop a JJ and lose exactly 2 crit slots, with the same tonnage available and moving 107.
Construction is what makes the Bad Clams bad.
What kind of quirks would you need to make up for 50% less tonnage that Mr Gargles could have?
31 tons up from 20. 5% faster reverse speed certainly won't do that.

I'm on board with allowing clan omnis to change endo/ferro, but think it should have to stick with its stock engine.
