An i5 vs i7 isn't the main issue when looking at the cpu - it's the frequency they run at - max your cpu's ghz.
Use Throttlestop to run it at its max 3.8ghz with good cooling - if you can overclock it, do that too.
Max cpu with a good gpu will give you excellent framerates.
