I have to say, why isn't there a proper solution for downloading your files with the patcher. Having a dedicated file-servers is so old school.

Why isn't there a proper peer-to-peer system where these files are being shared/transfered among others. A good example is Star Citizen. They got a nice peer to peer system for file sharing. My download is at least 50Mbit/s. At this time I only manage to have a download speed of less then 100Kb/s which sucks big time. I know you guys mentioned something to avoid this, but still. This is should not be a standard procedure.

Yep totally agree, there really are faster ways to get the patches downloaded than the current crawl. And as you say given that we have such fast connections the only bottleneck is the servers dishing them out.

Also a good side effect is that the servers have a better loadbalance since the dedicated servers only need to fill the missing bits and pieces. Only the first initial download will be a load spike.

I don't know what your internet is smokin' but I've never had anything less than my full 30 Mb download speeds while patching.

Could be because I have class after work on Tuesdays so I don't patch until about 9:30pm Central time, I suppose...

There is nothing stopping anyone from grabbing the last batch of good files and putting them on a torrent site.

I use 2 installs of MWO. One on my SSD, which I play from. The other is on my large archive hard drive.

If my main install crashes, I can either reboot, or run my second install and get back in game immediately.

If my files are corrupted, I run a batch file that pulls files from the opposite install.

If the patcher freaks out, or if the repair tool tells me that I have to download large files, I grab them from my second folder instead.

When both need updated, I update my original install location first and then use a batch file to move over the newer files.

This has saved me countless hours of downloading, rebooting and frustration due to crashes.


With this strategy in mind, PGI or anyone could simply zip up the main folders and put them up on the torrents.

I bet you didn't download it on prime time when the patch was released. The point is, the first 15 out of 20 patches where the biggest (btw 20 patches really....). After those 15 patches, small and speed went up. As far I can see, peer-to-peer file sharing is really the way to go these days.

FYI, as best as I can tell the PGI patching/distribution systems uses Akamai to host the content for patches. So it is NOT centralized and should be quite well distributed globally for quick download. Of course for this to work, everyone needs well behaved DNS servers to help properly route you to the closest (in network performance terms) download location. This is far superior to an ad-hoc peer-to-peer systems (such as was used by MTX). There will, of course, be some delay in distributing new content out to all of teh correct Akamai nodes after a patch is released, much as there would be in a peer-to-peer system. Also note that since the files are being served by Akamai, your download traffic should have zero impact on the actual game servers.
