I had the same problem, and the creation of the directory fixed it.
As hint why the error may have occurred: I just did yesterday the standard windows disk clean up (where he removes the garbage and the temporary files).

Hey guys, just did some quick tests, MechWarriorOnline.exe from the april 21th patch apparently crashes because of a non-existent temp directory normally used (and created) by the patcher.
Check your registry at 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Production', find the value TEMPFOLDER and create the path it points to, the launcher should run again afterwards.

I just had this problem today. Thank heavens I found this thread.
I've been chasing down a separate issue where I booted down, booted up the next day, and now getting terrible framerates in MWO. I loaded up Skyrim and seemed to be OK, though it was maybe lower than normal.
I noticed my fans didn't seem to be spooling up as quickly - and that's how I noticed my GPU temps weren't even climbing, so it wasn't an issue I had a long time ago where my fans weren't spooling up (solved by using MSI Afterburner).
Which was really weird cause usually my GPU starts getting to work when I boot up MWO (nothing incredible, settles around 60-65 degrees, which MSI Afterburner uses as a signal to kick my fans up around 60%...so I can hear when my GPU is working lol).
Couldn't figure out why that was.
I ran CCleaner & did a quick virus scan, then turned it off, cleaned out my computer (desktop I built myself), booted back up...and MechWarriorOnline.exe would not start. Ran the repair tool, everything was fine and it didn't find anything to fix.
Found this thread, applied this fix, and MWO started fine.
Now I'm doing a full virus scan just in case, but it looks like my graphics card & MSI afterburner are properly working again (maybe some of the tweaking I did to the fan curve did something too, dunno).
End result: all is well again. The joys of self-taught computer geeking.
Thanks for finding that fix, Ace Kirby!

Seven days later I still can't get my game to launch. Sent everything requested via email on the trouble ticket. When is this going to be fixed? Will I get my premium time back? Will I be able to participate in the tournament?

Hi all, support etc...
Having this exact same problem after running a virus scan/cleaner.
I am able to open regedit... find the temp folder in registry; but the information on the fix gets a little weak when it starts talking about create apath to it?? etc..
How do I do this.
Pretty much no option besides tis fix will work for me, because I don't have 3 days to wait for a full uninstall reinstall at the current server download speed...geesh.
Here's my info.

Support... please detail the steps to fix this. What I have read is another member figuring out the problem, and basically a "oh yeah, we will try to fix that and test it etc.." but no step by step fix.
Please help.

Step-by-step for Windows 7:
(you can try skipping to the *- and just straight out try that and see if it already fixes your issue)
- Click on the windows-button (usually bottom-left corner, on the task-bar)
- Click into the search-box at the bottom of the menu popping up
- Type REGEDIT into the box and hit enter (a new window opens)
- Be careful not to change anything in that window if you are not REALLY REALLY sure what you are doing
- Click on the little arrow on the left of HKEY_CURRENT_USER to expand that list
- Scroll down the list until you find "Software" and click on the little arrow next to it to expand that list
- Scroll down the list until you find "Piranha Games" and click on the little arrow next to it to expand that list
- Click on the little arrow next to "MechWarrior Online" to expand that list
- Click on "Production" and then on the right half of the window you should see two entries ((Standard) and under it TEMPFOLDER)
- Note down the file-path on the right of TEMPFOLDER (might be something like c:\Piranha Games\MWOUpdate\)
- Close the whole window
*- Right-click on the windows button and choose Open Windows-Explorer
*- Navigate to your c:\-drive and re-create the file-path you noted down (c:\Piranha Games\MWOUpdate\ if you don't have it, make a new folder named Piranha Games and then inside that make a new folder called MWOUpdate)
If any of this seems to complicated for you just don't do it, wait for PGI to fix it.
If you're running another OS than win7 you might have to search through google to see how to open/navigate your registry.

Thanks IronWithin
I actually just called and talked with my Uncle who is into setting up servers, IT stuff etc...
Talking with him I actually worked out the issue myself. At least it fixed the issue for me.
I was able to run REGEDIT.. I found the associated file. Under the category "value" it gave a location for where the temp folder "should" be. Users/Programs/Temp/etc...
When I went into that folder there was no subfolder named "Mechwarrioronline" as a temp folder so I created a folder; named it that and Presto... launcher runs..game plays.
The term "create a path" made me think I had to associate something in the registry to a folder in the C drive. But actually as it turned out, the registry value registered a folder and location where it should be, that got wiped with the virus cleaner; so creating a folder is what worked.
Thx again for your response.

Thanks to Ironwithin for the precise guide, this should work for all versions of Windows (on Win8 use the Windows key on your keyboard to reach the menu with the search field), mind his warnings though, if you aren't exactly sure what you're doing, ask a friend or wait for the official fix.
TBH I'm a bit disappointed the fix didn't make into the last hotfix, so next try on the 5th I guess.
