lore wise there are rear view cameras, as well as down, left, and right. Just not a priority in game atm.

Mechs had rear facing weapons so I assume that they'd need to be able to see what they're shooting back there.

No other Mechwarrior games had this feature, so why would you expect it from MWO? It's impossible. Just like multiple targeting buttons (nearest enemy, etc).

MW4's had this, and I was pretty sure MW3 had it too if I am not mistakened and a limited degree MW2 had it for 3rd person view.

Mech could use rear facing weapons in TT because you saw them in "3rd person" and It was assumed via the rules that the mechs sensors could detect the enemy 360 degrees.
So, I think we should be able to mount and use rear facing weapons only if you switch to 3rd person mode. I'm kidding of course. Or am I?

I hope that some day we'll get a condensed 360 degree viewer on the HUD like in lore. There ought to be a way to do it. How much time it would take to code in CryEngine, I have no idea, but I bet it would be a big undertaking.

You don't actually want to see that being done. In BTech lore MechWarriors spends years training to drive a Mech and learning how to deal with looking at 360 view compressed into a 160 screen is a real pain. I've tried it a few times with other MW games and believe me, you get massive headaches real quick. Not to mention it's a total PITA to figure out distances and such due to how compressed the view is.

Well in all fairness, a modern tank (even some LAV's) lack a rear view mirror... so yea... even today we have 4.3 million dollar piece of equipment being backed up by someone with a minimum grade 10 education and no way to see behind them....

as far as I know (and this isn't personal experience, just a lot of TV watching) modern tanks/armoured vehicles do have them, by dint of them putting armoured cameras on them. some even have them on the sides.

True, I'd probably need a monitor as big as an actual 'mech's cockpit class to get any use out of it!

For me, it has more to do with my mechs getting stuck on rocks, tree trunks and invisible walls at moments where I'm under fire and I don't really have the luxury of turning around to see what's blocking my path. And so I'm hitting reverse throttle 100%, but going nowhere, because I can't see the little pebble blocking the path of my 100 ton mechanical walker.

You monster :)

"Was just doing my job" ;)

Though I do have a healthy respect for the ZSU... they can spit rounds like nothing else..

I think it's a limitation of the game engine if I remember previous posts from other users correctly.

quite possibly, though I haven't seen posts about it myself and as I was bored waiting the obligatory 30 minutes to get into CW I thought 'stuff it, might as well do something' and posted up the only mech thing that was on my mind (other than 'sodding hell! this is boring me to tears!')

A mech has only one crew member. So in all fairness, that dude should have some way of seeing what's behind him :)

ideally they would also have a flashing light and some kind of klakon going "warning.... mech reversing..." whilst doing it.

do you engage backwards?....

just install a seismic sensor and you see stuff that come sup from behind^^

not so much worried about bad guys sneaking up on me as trying to maneuver in a cluster and avoid getting stuck on terrain. plus trying to pull j-turns to impress the ladies

You can either live with it or join a real life army to get full realism.

given that I can hardly avoid hitting walls with a simulation what do you think the chances would be of them letting me drive a real tank? Even if I asked really nicely.

That cockpit glass isn't what you look out of, the display is usually projected in your neurohelmet's visor.

So we have sensors that can ID the damage on a mech, a floating cam for 3rd person view, UAVs, ECM, a million and one bits of assorted marvels of engineering and electronics blahblahblah

but
no rear-view mirror

Seriously? Did no-one think of putting a $100 camera and a £50 screen in the cockpit so we could see behind us when reversing the $100,000,000,000 walking-tank!?

Very random thought and undoubtadly not at the top of the to-do-list but the idea got stuck in my head so I thought I would share.

there's you answer.... conversion rates are lostech... single supplier only :D

Don't be ridiculous. Next thing you'll tell me that old MW games had multiple controls for jump jets, instead of just using the space bar.

Bah! Humbug!

I really hope this is sarcastic

A rear-view mirror would require re-rendering the entire space behind you. Needless to say that'd be an enormous increase to draw calls. At this point, it'd basically be fluff.

Yes, previous MW titles had it. Previous MW titles also had a lot less to render. ;)

Nope I go with the OP here, my Mom's Kia minivan has a rear view camera, the display is in the rear view mirror activated by reverse.

The best suggestion is a view rear button that gives a view with no hud and no ability to fire weapons

Well, I guess its a good thing education has absolutely no bearing on driving skill. I wonder what country has a 10th grade education standard for its military. Crazy. Probably a reason for these vehicles not having rear view mirrors is 1, a turret that can turn and 2 a hatch that the commander can just look out of. Either way, it allows for a controlled, observed reverse, unlike in mechs, which would be a complete disaster. Imagine if trip mechanics were in this game and you were backing up into all of the trash that lays around?
