I just wanted to point out for the curious, that in Battletech, and in the Lore, there was indeed mech targeting and tracking in the rear firing arc. Some mechs had weapons mounted to fire into that arc. Others, like the Wolverine, had a ball mounted head turret with 360 fire, and mechs like the Rifleman had arms that simply flipped over for rear facing fire.

The targeting and tracking sensors showed the pilot a full 360 degrees of combat information. The pilots were fully aware of what was behind them.

Mechwarrior here and Battletech differ in a number of key areas, including this rear arc situation.

If you did have the full 360 targeting info, it would change the gameplay somewhat - (harder to sneak attack, etc...) However, mechs would still be equipped with less armor on the back of the mech.

If you turn around, you can fire all of your weapons at that guy behind you and have your full frontal armor to bear.

Fatlasses do not have that luxury against l33t lolcusts like moi (or however you spell it)
We should implement a "fire rear weapon's button" and change mechs' hardpoints like the AS7-D so that, when pressed, if the last targetted mech is 270 meters behind you or less, you can fire at it for a 50% hit chance.

When I played in the battletech pods my Atlas had a rear facing medium laser that wasn't useful but you could fire behind.

Atlases don't have protection from any angle against l33t lolcusts, though...

Might also help to persuade someone parked on your butt to move so you can back up. 😉

In other words, peeked from the same spot more than once.

Sometimes I wonder if people make extremely stupid statements like that sarcastically on purpose or if they really don't know better.

Turning around takes a lot of time and it's not just about firing, it's about AWARENESS.

Your post has the intellectual quality of a kindergartener.

What really bothers me is that there is a statement like that in almost every thread.
To all those people: Please do the gene pool a favor, don't procreate.

Turning around doesn't take a lot of time unless you're in something like a Dire Whale.

If you need rear-view cameras and weapons to know what's going on behind you, your own "intellectual quality" isn't as high as you think it is.

We already even have the Seismic Sensor module that makes it stupidly easy to know where every enemy within 250m of you is located. What you're really wanting is for information about enemy whereabouts to be just handed out like candy to you.

Uh, he actually made a well-thought out point that many players should pay attention to. If you are in a bigger, slower 'mech, your movement should be well-thought out in advance and every new position should be carefully tended to. That means positioning yourself properly to be able to turn around and defend your rear flank, or, even better, put something behind it so it can't be attacked.

I think you're just having trouble comprehending what he said. That isn't his fault.

These don't exist. Though there are good pilots that take crap mechs like lolcusts and do well in them.

my urbanmech has 360 firing arc....... that is because Urbanmech is best mech.

I'd put my AC20 on backwards just for all those derps that like to park right behind me.

Well, if we have rear-firing, perhaps we should put auto-aim on it to make things easier. Then I can turtle-back my mechs and just "back that **** up." ;)

I was thinking about putting all my armor on my back and doing a Justin Xiang. Imagine the surprise when some pesky Light tries to sneak up on ya.

rear firing weapons are interesting and  helpful. but I would like side and rear view cameras, with more freedom of movement for the arms so I can shoot mechs that are on my right or left side without torso twisting.
