Hi, I'm totally new to Mechwarriors lore and I like to get immersed in the games I play. I've been reading a lot but I'm struggling to narrow down what mechs available in the game go with what clans, I'm currently planning on playing lights and perhaps in Clan Ghost Bear, but I was wondering, what mechs in game that can be played are suitable for each clans?

I'm kind of staying clear of the Wolf Clan as they seem the most popular clan atm and I'd rather fight for the less represented clans.

If you're thinking about Clan Ghost Bear, well, there aren't any "Clan Ghost Bear exlusive" mechs in-game right now (Kodiak is probably the most iconic Ghost Bear mech, but there are a couple of problems with it, since its not an omnimech, which would explain why its not in-game).

Besides, most (if not every single one) of the current clan mechs were used by all clans.

Ghost Bear is clearly the greatest of the clans. :)

First, welcome to MWO. Second, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. If you mean lore-wise, I'm not an expert. Game wise, any clan can use any clan mech. And that's only a restriction in CW. In public drops, anybody can use anything. As for lights, clan lights are pretty tough to use at this point and I wouldn't recommend them to a new player. The Arctic Cheetah is coming this summer and looks like an improvement.

If you'd like some help/training or just to meet some Ghost Bears, feel free to check us out at clankodiak.enjin.com

And did I mention welcome to MWO?

I think sarna might be what you're looking for: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_Page

The Stormcrow is probably the best mech for you to buy first, it's one of the strongest in the game, and can run many kinds of weapons. Ir's 55 tons and fairly fast.

The clan lights (until the arctic cheetah) are kinda underwhelming. The kitfox and adder are like small mediums (same speed as stormcrow) and the mist lynx lacks both tonnage and hardpoints. If you're going to get lights, I'd go for the kitfox.

Thanks for the welcome :) What I meant is I read things like the Ice Ferret is used extensively by Clan Wolf, Stormcrow and Mist Lynx by Clan Smoke Jaguar, Kit Fox by Jade Falcon, things like that. I'd like to pilot mechs that are the main stay of the clans.

Oh you meant like that.
Hmmm. I'm not sure if i recall correctly, but I'm pretty sure Clan Ghost Bear really liked Mad Dogs (even made the Mad Dog III) and the upcoming Gladia...Uhhm... Executioner. The latter in particular was made by the Clan Ghost Bear originally.

Thanks, I seem to only be able to make 5 posts today and can't respond to anything other than my own post atm. I'll take a look at the Stormcrow, I've not got involved in Clan Warfare as you can probably count the number of battles I've been in on two hands atm.

Btw on the whole do Clan players outnumber IS players or vice versa?

One last question, do you have to invest real money to buy mechs or can you just buy them with ingame credits?

IS players outnumber clans. You can buy the vast majority of mechs with in-game credits. Also, keep in mind that while IS mechs are initially cheaper, they cost a comparable amount of cbills to upgrade them to be on par with new in box clan mechs.

In game credits are enough. New players get 1 day of premium time for free and a cadet bonus for their first X games, which is enough to buy a decent first mech, though you might need to play a few extra games to get a Stormcrow. The only SCR I currenrly own is the SCR-D, which costs a bit over 13 million C-bills to outfit in the Streak loadout for example.

IS players currently outnumber Clan players.

Well the mechs we have right now for the Clans, were used by them all during the invasion, some more heavily than others...

The Falcons favored the Summoner, Hellbringer and Kit Fox.
The Ghost Bears favored the Mad Dog (for the units we have in game right now, soon to add the Executioner to that)
The Wolves favored the Timber Wolf, Ice Ferrit and Dire Wolf.
The Jaguars favored the Mad Dog, War Hawk and Dire Wolf (soon to add the Ebbon Jaguar to that list)

Here's a very good new player guide to MWO https://docs.google....dit?usp=sharing

Edit: with that list of mechs above, Jade Falcon may be a good pick for you in terms of a CW drop deck that focuses on favored chassis. 3 Hellbringers and a Kit Fox. Either that or Smoke Jags with stormcrows.

Clan Ghost Bear has kind of gotten the shaft when it comes to mechs that have made it in to MWO. They have only had half of their favored mechs released. All clans use mostly the same designs, but each clan tends to favor certain designs more than others.

Ghost Bear: Mad Dog, Executioner (Coming soon)

Wolf: Adder, Ice Ferret. Nova, Timber Wolf, Gargoyle

Jade Falcon: Kit Fox, Hellbringer, Summoner

Smoke Jaguar: Mist Lynx, Stormcrow, Warhawk, Dire Wolf (also Arctic Cheetah, Shadow Cat, and Ebon Jaguar all Coming Soon)

Wave 3 should really just be called Smoke Jaguar Wave.

Tried the stormcrow, didn't really do it for me I tried all the clan mechs available on trial today, I had fun in the morning with the kit fox although It was a very passive mech and I didn't shoot much without dying. Tried the Mad Dog and it didn't suit me well as well, I had a great deal of fun with the Gargoyle.

When I run a Mad Dog, I do it in one of two builds:

This is a high risk vs reward build, and it can beat King Crabs in a brawl, you just have to stick to chain fire, and keep mobile.

MDD-PRIME

This build is all about suppression, and it works remarkably well with it, just set the LRM's to chain, when you find someone with out AMS cover, if they have AMS volley fire.

MDD-PRIME

The big thing about the Mad Dog, is you have to pick and chose your targets to get the most out of the mech, the other thing about her, is with the large ST hit boxes, you will lose a side, when it's gone, use it as a damage reduction shield for your CT. When your CT goes red, swap to using the other ST as a shield, as you will die when you lose either your CT or both ST's.

Ghost bear does a lot of... (mostly mechs that can / will / are in game, bold = in game atm or 100% confirmed, underlined = very iconic to said clan))

King Crab (SLDF - IS mech)
Supernova (Kingcrab IIC basicly)
Highlander (SDLF - IS mech)
Highlander IIC
Kodiak (Highlander IIC IIC? xD)
Gargoyle
Executioner
Mad Dog

Fire moth
Mist Lynx
Shadowhawk (SLDF - IS mech)
Stormcrow (?)

Viper
Adder

C
lan wolf does a lot of...

Mad Dog
Timber Wolf

Direwolf
Ice Ferret

Wolfhound IIC
Orion IIC

Gargoyle
Shadow cat

Clan jade falcon did a lot of...

Timberwolf
Kitfox
Hellbringer
Summoner

Warhawk

Smoke jaguar...

Shadowcat
Ebon Jaguar

Timberwolf
Summoner
Hellbringer

This is the approximation.Ghost bear is best foor my knowledge, however the Ice ferret to clan wolf is a definite due to how it came to be. (used to be called wolf hunter, was clan ice hellion but wolf won a few battles and took the mech as there own basicly) or the ebon jaguar for smoke jaguar (up until 3053-ish this was exclusive to them)

majority of clan mechs especially in game often are to each faction and are quite common. ie timberwolf, mad dog, etc. So yea. Just read up and enjoy.

While true, even these Clan Mechs were favored by certain Clans.
According to my 3050TRO
Mist Lynx prevalent among Smoke Jaguar.
Kit Fox is the primary light of the Jade Falcons.
Wolf makes more use of the Puma.
Ice Ferret in large numbers in Wolf, supposed to be a big contributor to their wins.
Nova is mainly even among Clans, slightly more in Wolf.
Stormcrow is seen more in Smoke Jaguars.
Mad Dog seen the most with Ghost Bears followed by Smoke Jaguar.
Hellbringer, a favorite of Jade Falcon.
Summoner, heaviest Mech in general use by Jade Falcons.
Timber Wolf is a favored Heavy of Clan Wolf.
Gargoyle is seen more among Wolf forces.
Warhawk seen most in Smoke Jaguar, #2 is Ghost Bear, #3 is Jade Falcon.
Gladiator (Wave 3) seen most in Ghost Bear, way less in other Clans.
Dire Wolf is a favorite of Smoke Jaguar.

The ones not in MWO
Fire Moth favored by Ghost Bear though all Clans use it very little.
Viper is used more in Ghost Bear, even said they overuse it.

Other upcoming Wave 3 Mechs
Arctic Cheetah stolen by Smoke Jaguar, used by one other not in WMO Clan too.
Shadow Cat became big in Smoke Jaguar, Wolf and a few others not in game yet.
Ebon Jaguar straight up Smoke Jaguar

This comes from the TROs, most information not on Sarna.net.

If you want to RP Ghost Bear by choosing their favorites, you focus on the Mad Dog with some play of others. Preferred Ghost Bear lights are not in the game but you can still use the ones you have access too.

I'm quite enjoying the Mist Lynx atm, like a little missile mech with jump jets, gives me the mobility I like that the bigger ones don't and I don't appear to be much of a target and if I am I can usually get out of there quickly. Is the Adder at all like it?

The Adder works more like an under armoured medium... this has the advantage of often being ignored for bigger targets, usually a fatal mistake...

This is how I usually run mine:

COUGAR-PRIME
