17K For Tukayyid?

17k participation for an event this big is disheartening.
I am unsure as to what to do about it, but we as a community needs to do what we can to get and retain new players.
We need to be encouraging and helpful to new players, help them learn and enjoy the game, because without a healthy and growing population there will be no CW or MWO.
Try to help the new players, friend them, get them on VOIP or TS, show them where they are going wrong and what they are doing right.

The event wasn't that big, those of us who played BT and read the novels originally are in our mid 30s, how many even know the significance?

Thanks the whiners in the solo queue that basically can't happen, you "bring a friend" you are thrown into the group queue where the level of play is significantly higher.
....Factor in the "Paulconomy™" and they will be running for the door as soon as they relize the cadet bonus barely covers a medium that is built right and they are staring at hour and hour of grinding just to get one set of modules.

This isn't complicated. This is one of the few games where I have seen so much bitching about people not being able to beat organized teams. You wouldn't expect to win against an organized team in LoL, BF4, CS:GO, or any other game? So why is it that people are so antagonistic toward people that have the wonderfully genius insight that if they work together they win more?

However, if you look at LoL- which is very popular- one can easily grind for 35 hours to unlock one Champion- who then needs about 166 additional hours to grind out the Runes needed to optimize it. All assuming you win every game with an 'average' score.
PGI is still working on the NPE. Pretty sure a free customizable mech will eventually be part of it.

Because some people only played the single player MechWarrior campaigns and expect this game to be exactly like those previous titles. Funny enough those same people tend to be the ones who screw their team over cause they try to man mode the entire team by themselves then get rocked in 2 seconds.

Every time someone talks about adding more queues (1v1, 2v2, 3v3 etc) people start screetching about buckets, and it's always the people who's bucket stands to lose some weight who piss and moan the most.

As opposed to CW which is just humming along now that the event is over?
Solo still has a higher population.

I have been a BT fan since CH:inception and MW1. I owed the 3rd edition box set with ALL the unseen mechs in it. That being said, to my OP, how do WE as a community grow a healthy population of players?
All I hear about is how PGI makes you grind out c-bills to get better equipment. Seems legit to me. I played WoW for a bit, Diablo and Final Fantasy 11. I know grinding. So petition to change it. Maybe we should just give every new player and DWF-S? They will definitely appreciate what they have at that point. I do agree that the cadet missions leave you with little more than to buy a decent medium. My 7 year old loves MWO and I set him up an account. He is not very good and after 25 missions had enough for 3 spiders. Hardly getting started at that point.
How do you keep it fun and exciting for new players without just handing them free stuff? I don't know. I do like the idea of a campaign aspect. Drop the cadet achievements and put in a campaign, let them keep the mech they finish with.
PGI will do what they do. Complaining about it might effect a certain amount of change. NOT TO BE RELIED UPON. The thing you hate someone else might love. No company can work within those bounds. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO WE AS A COMMUNITY HELP NEW PLAYERS!!!!!!! I like MWO, I love the BT universe and this is a good way to experience it since there hasn't been a stand alone game in how long? So what can we do?

Give players more choices as to the experience they want to have. Smaller game modes, 1v1 2v2 etc, PvE, ffa. If people can find a niche for themselves and improve their skills there, they may venture forth into other parts of the game better prepared for it. Smaller game modes also allow players to play with actual real life friends, and get more people into the game.
this game really needs to have a starter mech. Make the player choose a faction, then let them pick out of 2 or 3 mechs that are commonly used by that faction as their starter. Keep the cadet bonus so they can upgrade their mech, or save to buy a new one. Keep the trial mechs in case they really mess up.
Better lore, better immersion. Better game mechanics that allow skilled players to win, while still allowing less skilled players to have fun.

Which has nothing to do with what I said, the SOLO queue can't even get 3 of each class half the time, much less separate Elo brackets. I was seeing MS, CI, HHoD, NKVA and such in the solo queue with a CADET bonus still attached.

New playes (and a fair few OLD players) don't want to be helped. If you can't be bothered to do so much as log into a public TS and get grouped you are always going to be on the short end of that stick.
Or play in the solo kiddie pool, and make no mistake that is exactly what it is.

Yeah - we have people dropping with us who actually still are getting their cadet bonuses in some cases and I'm sure that's common in big units. Honestly I'm amazed 17k showed up for Tukayyid since it seems like I run into the same people every night.

These are all good ideas. Getting someone to try this game is easy...getting them to keep playing is pretty difficult.

I like this idea, I think that would go along way to getting people in the game. Especially coupled with a campaign mode.
This game has a pretty steep learning curve even without the META builds. If all you do is get vaporized in the first 30 seconds of every match, that is a turn off. We, as more regular and veteran players can at least try to keep the new players alive and give them advice

Which is why 2v2 would be good. You could bring a friend in and show them how to play without worrying about them wandering into a full 12 enemy mechs and getting put down before he can even fire a shot.
PvE would be a good training mode for people getting into the game by themselves... it would hopefully teach them the basics on how to pilot and shoot.
I personally like ELO systems, as the game will put you against people of similar skill. I would like to see a tiered system like starcraft where you play with people in your bracket. Bronze, silver, gold etc... Nice thing about that system is it gives you a visual representation of your personal skill level, as well as motivates players to get better so they can get into the next bracket.

Bam every new person has plenty of ways to save while having 4 customizable mechs from the get go, one from each weight class.
Also im not a lore person but with the ranting about the importance of tukayyid from my tabletop buddy I expected a better turnout. But hey cw problems plus map reset...
