well i have 50 mechs, and bought MC 3 times.. Spent 15 dollars, twice, and 30 once.. so in 2 years i have spent 60 bucks, which basically factors into just barely a dollar a mech and that includes a bunch of paints.. A few mechs have been given out for free along with mech bays, but i have not one a single award in the clan wars, so really my spending/buying habits are about getting the biggest bang for your buck using sales and such.

I have 5 heroes, bought about 8 paint colors, tons of mech bays, and a few bundles of premium time. My favorites are the single day passes which cost 250 MC, for those days i just wanna play for 15 hours :P the monthly or weekly's just don't work for me, cause i swear when i do buy um, i just end up taking a break from the game for too long or just burn out to fast. Heck even when they give the free 3 day weekend passes, i typically only play for one day, or a couple of short play sessions..

the year long bundle do sound appealing though when i have seen it on sale, it's like 80 bucks? for a whole year of boosting, and that i could see if you were a harder core player to really make it pay off. Still wish i bought it when it was on sale around new years but ah well.

5k+ matches, 2+ years of playing, and 50 mechs for 60 bucks.. seems like a darn good ftp model to me :)

FYI, i say all this not to be a cheapskate, but not all of us have tons of money to toss around, so for me it is a treat when i can spend some money on MC and pick up the extra's.. and i am so happy, that the others that can support the game with their wallet or we would not be having this conversation.

So I am a huge fan of classic Mech Warrior, and I was extremely excited when this game was announced. I tried it out and really liked it, but decided I'd come back to it after some time (it was still beta). Looking at it now, it looks, quite frankly, ridiculous. I'm sure the gameplay is really cool, but the fact that you could spend $1,000s on mech packs is a little disconcerting. I guess I'm posting here to ask if the game can be enjoyed for a reasonable amount of money. I don't expect to play completely for free, and don't mind dropping some cash here and there, but I don't like the idea of spending thousands on one game. Furthermore, does looking at the store page's bundles give a generally inaccurate impression on pricing?

Literally the only thing that deserves spending money on (int he closest sense to a regular basis as far as this game is concerned) is mechbays, and even those you can get from community warfare rewards.

I've been playing this game for a long time now (you can check my profile to see the exact date I joined), and I've spent very little on it, especially considering I also dabble in warhammer 40K. The packs are extremely price friendly (virtually every pack is worth 1.5-2x the price you get them for), if you want to buy them. The packs in actuality are just preorders on what will be available for purchase with in-game currency within a few months, plus one or two exclusive items, and a unique variant for the chassis you pre-ordered (it's identical to a variant with the same designation, the pre-order variant has unique geometry, and a 30% C-Bill boost).

Spoiler

There is no pay to win in this game. The most you'll get is pay to speed things up (with a premium account giving you 50% increase in XP and C-Bill earnings (they stack with the reward bonus for a total of 80% if you have premium active, while piloting a mech that has the 30% boost)

My 2c here. I've spent more money on this game that I'd like to think about, so I'm not going to think about it..... BUT.... If you only have small amounts of doh to blow, I'd sincerely recommend picking up the lowest tier of any Month 1 Pre-order pack.
You get three (one of which earns bonus C-bills) Light mechs, two of which you can sell if you decide you really don't like them, as well as premium time, warhorns, camo specs, Paints, ALL TEH TINGZ!

Sure, the bigger packs have more stuff, or shinier stuff, or stuff with stuff.
But the basic, so new it has the New Car (Mech) smell, pre-order will still give you all you could ever want in misc junk, till the next pack comes out. And I cannot express how GOOD Premium time is for earning those Pesky C-bills, and early Pre-orders come with it. I believe I have almost a year of Premium Time Banked because of Tier One Month One Pre-orders.

Sorry, bit of a ramble, but basically, Early Bird Bonuses give Premium Time for cheap. Premium Time GOOOOD!

Also, activate your premium time via your profile on the website. This way, no matter how much you have stored, you can activate it in 30 day Chunks, instead of all at once. Note that Premium Time NOT bought with a Pack is automatically activated.

Both Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy Battles for me. This game is super cheap compared to that plastic crack. ;)

Truth. I have 10k pts worth of Eldar (give or take, and no, I didn't jump on the band wagon. I started in 3rd). That is some expensive stuff to play, and yet we still keep getting suckered by GW.

Those mech bays can be winned by cw???

and via challenges, PGI has also given away mechs like the WHK-C in the last CW event (Battle of Tukayyid) or a BNC.

They have also given away Adders, Thunderbolts, Ravens and others. They all come with mechbays and lower tier rewards like 1,000,000 cbills, GXP, Consumable and even Mech Bays and the like so even if you dont get the Grand Prize you can get something.

Mech bays are technically the only thing you NEED to purchase if you want to increase you stable beyond the entry level amount of mechs.

You also need 3 of each chassis in order to master said mech and have it be on par with others you will find in the game.
Also need to factor in DHS and Endo upgrades as all good builds utilize these two things.

Save those pennies, each IS mech needs almost 2 million in upgrades to be anything other then a stock mess.

and that is just for DHS and Endo, if it needs a new engine especially an XL engine that will be upto 6 million extra (for a large XL) unless you happen to have an appropriate engine available

I played this game for over a year without paying anything and had a great time. I finally broke down and dropped $100 on MCs about 6 months ago because I wanted custom paint and, honestly, I was feeling a little guilty for not paying for something I loved so much.
Definitely can be enjoyed for free!

For the record, when you purchase paint, it's unlocked for every mech ever, released, or not yet released.

Camo is unlocked on a chassis basis. For example, if I buy blue paint. I can use it on all my mechs. If buy fractal for my urbie, I can only put fractal on urbies.

There are also two types of camo: permanent, and single-use.

Permanent means it's unlocked for all variants of this chassis, past, future, or present, and I can swap into a different camo, and go back to it without a problem.

Single use (which is insanely cheap by comparison to permanent), is only for the variant I slapped it on, and it lasts until I remove it/swap into a different camo pattern. For example, my COM-2D has a single use camo pattern on it right now. Bought it a loooooong time ago. It's still on it. However, it's only on that particualr 2D, (If I buy another 2D, I don't get the camo for it). Also, if I change it, it's gone. Since it's a disposable 1 time use thing.

So paint is always worth buying as a luxury. Camo, stick to one use for the best results.

Ditto what most other people here have said. If you're looking for a wise way to spend not much money, the mastery packs represent the best value in the game. Although make sure you do your homework so you're sure the pack comes with the variants you want :)

Actually, MWO is the most friendly free-to-play game I've ever tried. I suppose that's why the Mech packs are so expensive; they have to make money somehow! I played for about a year and a half without spending any money, then finally got so into it that I bought three different Mech Packs. I kind of went overboard, but you don't have to do what I did. With the amount of giveaways and free stuff, you really could play this game without ever spending money on it. There would be a bit of a grind, but it wouldn't be any worse than other games such as STO, LOTRO, TOR, PS2, GR:P, etc.

Speaking of events I do prefer the changing weekend events over to a set system determined daily event grind, sorta. There are a lot of those in other games where you HAVE to log in on day (x) to grind dungeon (y) and so on. It wears on me after a week or two. Still, having a daily bonus on c-bills for logging in can't hurt. I guess I played to many skinner box mobile type games that have fixed daily events. -_-
