I'll work around with the Jager DD Model, although, I still want defensive modifications, like have my Gauss Rifle and then have a defensive Energy or Ballistic Weapon to defend itself within close range.

Well, that's alright if you're mostly into the roleplaying aspects of the game.

The fact remains that 2x Gauss is simply much more efficient in all ranges than a single gauss frankenmech with so called defensive modifications. I'm sorry, but 2x Gauss will win, even in a fist fight.

Yes, you can get a little bit higher DPS on paper if you include some MGs, but those are incredibly short range and spread their low, pitiful damage everywhere.

You'd be much better off dealing 30 points of damage with dual Gauss to a single component from POINT BLANK RANGE than dealing 15 points of damage with 1 Gauss and far less than 15 damage extra spread all around your enemy, that you can ONLY use when you have enemies close.

Gauss has no minimum range. It's probably the single strongest weapon in the game. And 2 Gauss hits so hard, every mech that can mount 2 Gauss will always mount 2 Gauss (edit: if they have any Gauss that is, other large ballistics have their uses too), because it is that good. One of the main reasons why people pick Jager for a long range mech is because it can mount 2 Gauss. The best defense is to kill your enemy as fast as possible, and if you're a good shot, there are few things that do it more reliably on any range than 2 Gauss.

Did I mention that it would be good to have 2x Gauss on a Jager, if you plan to play long range?

There's really no tradeoff. 2 Gauss is very strong on long ranges, and can manage at short ranges. 1 Gauss isn't enough to trade with long range lasers and win, and a mix of different range weapons is inferior in short ranges as well.

I'm only writing this long a post because you only get Cadet Bonus once, and after that the money you get will come really slowly. You really want your mech to be good, and not waste tons of money on stuff that doesn't work well. That said, you can probably manage with even a bad mech in beginner tier games, if you have no interest to being a top performer in the matches you play.

GLHF, and welcome to MWO.
