Again, I don't really have an issue isolating components at range and I've not once used Adv. Zoom. I just have my zoom key set to toggle max zoom. Unquirked PPC's you're lucky if you hit a mech at max range, zoom or no due to projectile speed anyway. Guass/AC/ERLL are relatively trivial to hit your desired component. All imho of course and ymmv.
Oh, and I keep my situational awareness this way. Rather than guassing team mates in the back followed by "Sorry, was in zoom didn't see you".

A lot of my mechs poke out to 600m and I want to direct that damage as much as possible.
On brawlers I don't bring it, Seismic and Deprivation take care of everything.
