I've noticed that many of the mechs that can equip ballistic weapons only have one or two ballistic hard-points. This reduces the viability of lighter ballistic weapons (such as AC2, AC5) in favour of the larger weapons.
Considering how many slots, say, AC20s or LBX10s take up, additional hard-points will have very little to no impact on those weapons, but will make mixes and boats of MGs, AC2s and AC5s more attractive and useful, possibly bringing ballistics back into consideration vs light and medium laser boating.
Certainly, the utility AC2s and MGs is very limited without the ability to load more than two on a given mech.

If you take a look at the official MechLab video, you see one of the Devs customize his prime-variant Hunchback. It comes with one AC/20, but you can see in the stats that this takes up 2 of 3 ballistic hardpoints on the right torso. So yes, it seems mechs will have more hardpoints than the standard loadout would make you believe. And also some weapons seem to need multiple hardpoint slots.

Hmm. They must have cut them back then, the HBK-4G can only hold 2 ballistics weapons.

Can't say anything about the current ingame HBK-4G, but from the video you can tell that the AC-20 and AC-5 takes up 2 of the ballistic hardpoints while the machinegun and AC-2 are still selectible, suggesting they both only take up one hardpoint... which would allow you to put 3x AC-2 or machineguns on the hunchback. At least from the available hardpoints, not taking into account tonnage or room.
