I am glad OP made a nice mockup and kept his cool about this suggestion because I sure as hell didn't. I made this suggestion the day they pushed out the "new mechlab" but made sure to tear into PGI for that abomination. I mean, the sheer amount of derp PGI pushed out was kind of asking for it, and if they had simply hired somebody with a usability background it would have never happened in the first place.

+1 to OP for doing the work that PGI couldn't.
