Lately, matchmaker has been dropping me with players from good teams like QQ, Lords, 228, etc.

Does this mean I've gotten much better? Or just that MM is broken?

How many games have you played? If you are decent you will probably start to see good players after a surprisingly low number of matches (say, 50...). This is bad news if you are still in trial 'mechs, obviously. Player population, fragmentation across the game modes, the match-maker is trying but it just doesn't have a pool of sufficient depth to draw from IMO.

MM is always broken if you ask the people who complain about MM.

More likely scenario is that you have gotten good enough to join the ranks of those who know which end of their AC goes boom and how to point their torso towards the enemy. The standards in low Elo are not exactly high.

I did not say the standards were MUCH higher among the good players, so you can celebrate freely. :P

We're you playing in the group queue? The pool of players there is often smaller than for the solo PUGs, which means that in order to create a 12-man group the elo-net is often cast wider.

I've fought you and you seemed competent. Given that I also occasionally run into 228 or QQ (but not many Lords though) it doesn't surprise me in the least that you've bumped into them. Also, I might be crazy, but I think maybe that many of those dudes don't play the PUG queue often, so they may not have a ton of elo rating despite their high degree of training since it was primarily obtained via private match and CW matches, both of which have no elo modifier.

I could totally be wrong about that though, since I don't really know them personally or spend a lot of time in drops with them. If they want to correct me with anecdotal evidence, I am A-OK with that. Just a hypothesis.

If its quiet the MM will loosen up anyway so you could end up playing anyone so always take that into consideration. Perhaps playing in a weight class which has a low % so that your more likely to play in your bracket.
On another note you become the best by playing the best. I enjoy having people like proton, kaffe etc on the other team, I cant beat them if im too scared to fight them.

They do play in the group queue a lot and they do win a lot. Comp players don't "just play private matches/CW", they actually do have incredibly high W/L ratios, and as such... high Elo.

That isn't necessarily to say all people carrying the [228] or [QQ] tag are gods. Both of those units have recruits and less experienced or lower Elo players as well.

Also, you probably won't be running into any [Lord] because that unit has all but dissipated by now (members can correct me if I'm wrong). [EmP] however will always be comprised of only elite-tier players, and high Elo players like that might not have a solo queue Elo bracket to play along with, so matchmaker has to settle for putting them in mid-Elo games.

then at some point you will be sitting there waiting for minutes and minutes for finding a match. then you drop and see all OD green mechs. these matches you can almost throughout the play book. No one there knows it yet.

I suspect I am about average, and I often see players from the top teams, but I suspect not the top players from those teams

They're pretty good, yeah.

That's not to say they're used to the PUG queue though, since group and PUG are two different things, even if group queue does raise your elo. Every once in a blue moon I'll catch one off-guard and get a good kill, but facing them head-on tends to end poorly. I feel like the best way to kill "elite" players is to take advantage of their tendency to either erroneously rely on their comrades or abandon them entirely. So, yeah, that's pretty hit or miss, since not everyone with one of those tags fails to keep an eye on their own back or wanders off alone.

Don't forget that Elo is an individual rating and works well in Chess and other 1v1 games but not so well in team-based games. Matchmaking tries but it is an imperfect system at best.

@OP - yep, it means you are getting better! Believe it and it will be so :)
